Which takes us back to my original response- barking and snarling can be taught with marker training, especially since your dog is already vocal by nature.
Eliza,
I originally come from the Czech Republic and all of my family is still there. Now it is nothing like Mx or Guatemala, however; things have changed a lot and the crime rates over there are through the roof in certain places. In an area where there were only two break-ins throughout all of my growing up now the only houses that have not been broken into are the ones with dogs. Any dogs. Even complete couch potatoes. Once someone climbed over the fence at my parents' house. My parents' dog let him do it and just watched him, this kid was just dropping something off and knew the dog. On his way back over the fence the dog charged and ripped his pants. The kid never tried it again and the word spread quickly....
I would tend to agree in the fact that people are not likly to break into a house with a dog. In Guatemala people are horribly afraid of little dogs even! My problem with the last dog we had.. He was so comfortable with kids he would let them right on in if we were not home. (Our camper is made of tarp like a pop up.)He got so comfortable with people he would not do any protecting. My aim with Zuki is to train perfect OB so I can take her with me on the bus and to market (In Guatemala). But I don't know how to keep her from being desensitized, if you know what I mean. I stopped letting kids play with her when I found this site and read some things. I will never be able to prevent kids that are not as fearful from going near her, there are to many and our house is to small...
I guess you are just going to have to tell them that when you are around the dog is nice but when you aren't there.... they better watch out! Good luck with that, that is a tough one. I don't really have an advice for you on that one.
