Elizabeth,
have you seen or read End of the Spear? If you haven't I think you would love both the movie and the book (by Elizabeth Elliot). The reason I am mentioning this book (or movie) is the main characters were missionaries to one of the South American cannibal tribes. They refused to carry weapons because they knew that if they ended up being killed they were going to heaven unlike the tribespeople who did not know Christ. They indeed are killed. Their wives refuse to give up and set out for the jungle together with their children. They ended up reaching the entire tribe which gave up their cannibalistic practices, therefore the title, End of the Spear. It is a true story. I don't know if you know Elizabeth Elliot's books but I love every one of them.
With this I just want to make clear that I don't want you to think that I am against the use of weapons for protection. If you look throughout the Bible they were used heavily to protect Israel and they still are! You are in a place where you can't have one anyways, just making myself clear.
I firmly believe that having a gun takes away my faith because I than depend on it. If I do or don't have a gun at the time He wants me to go I will go, I serve in His name so I have nothing to fear, I will go in His name.
I like to make sure that when it is the bad guy's time to go, he goes. Save my faith that God will pull my trigger first.
There are always different interpretations.

Amen brother. If anyone intends to harm me or mine, they better be ready to meet their maker, assuming my aim is better than theirs. Don't threaten me or mine - I'll do my best to share what I have.
Elizabeth, in NO way is this meant to be disrespectful of your belief - at ALL.

That's one of the nice things about being LDS, self-defense is a tenant of our beliefs.
Ahhh, I miss Scott. Seriously.
He saw things from a different viewpoint than many of us, and to tell the truth I had a lot of good conversations with him via PM, so in some ways he was kinda misunderstood here.
Just my two cents worth.
