Alec,
my dogs also go nuts like that through the storm door or window at anyone who is on the front porch, especially if I am outside.
Last night my son was out playing in the front yard and the neighbors across the street were sitting on their front porch.
Loki would not stop hackling and barking and growling out the storm door and window. Before my son went outside he was fine, and if the neighbors were to come inside he would be his normal ridiculously friendly self.
I finally had to put him in the other room because he was driving me crazy.

The other thing tat freaks me out is when I am out walking with my dogs and adults point the dogs out to their kids. Kids love to stare.
My dogs head and a 5 year old childs head is about at the same height. So my dogs will glance at kids on the street playing and such.
When these kids eyes are locked on my dog and they stare he seems to take exception to that. I guess its a challenge to him. he doesnt care for that either.

By far the biggest problem I've seen are loose dogs on unfenced property. They always just run right into the street. It seems to be at epidemic proportions in suburbia.
A memorable example was when a greyhound shot across the street at us and started zig-zagging up and down the street from one side to the other. This dog was going about a hundred miles an hour. Total chaos. The owner finally caught the dog and said, unapologetically, that he always lets him run and play ball in the (unfenced) back yard. I pointed out that it was a miracle it didn't get hit by the passing cars...
I can't fathom how any sane dog owner could think that it's ok to let a greyhound run loose. It just defies explanation.

There's a law where I live against uncontrolled dogs off their own property.
Good reasons for it, IMHO.

I lived in suburbia growing up and definitely let my GSD mix run around the front yard/street unleashed. We lived at the end of a dead end street so it was more isolated (not a great excuse I know). In any case, it was 15+ years ago and I frankly didn't know any better. I'm glad I know better now though. That's for sure.
I think the most effective way to spread the knowledge is to educate others without prejudice (and also have sites like this one.)

Other times standing tall and proud and manly, wrapped in their
wanket ....
I'm married. I don't have to try anymore.
This is from the husband's perspective... not the wife's. Ahem... It's never too late to try a bit harder, so to speak...

Barbara, you made me snort this time!!
We went for a walk tonight and I had to tell off some lade with her yorkie off leash he was running all over the place like a a crazed little thing.
Chances are he would have been fine if he had run up to us, but I didn't want to risk it. He is smaller than my cats and it wouldn't take anything for Loki to do serious damage.
She looked at me like I had my head on backwards, when my dog was the one walking nicely on the leash.
Happens all the time......I have gotten used to it.

If you live where there are a lot of people you will always find those who ignore the rules. If you go to a dog park, well you have just put your dog amongst a bunch of dogs you have absolutely no control over.
I have an APBT and an Am Staff....we are always approached by dogs that are allowed to roam free. My male (APBT) could care less, he reacts only if another dog approaches me in an aggressive fashion. My female (Am Staff) is very dog aggressive and if another dog runs up on her , she goes behind me in a down and I PUNT....sounds nasty but she can do a lot more damage should another dog get close enough to put teeth on her.
My two LOVE people attention, but I shy away from handling as well because you never know how people are going react to a PB and what could be a lick to the face could all the sudden turn into an attempted dog attack by that big bad Pit....paranoid I know but I feel mine are safer being handled only by their own.

In NY we have leash laws. I walk my dogs in my neighborhood. While they have excellent recall I realize that ANYTHING can happen so as a responsible pet owner I keep them leashed. There are many dogs that are very used to staying UNLEASHED on their owners property. I recognize how nice it is to wash your car in your driveway while you dogs enjoys laying on the grass nearby. Nice all American leisure time....right?
I often wonder what would happen if I was walking my dogs (on leash) and one of these little yappers come running up to us and Jeter grabs them, shakes a few times and its all over. I have the Pit Bull that doesn't like other dogs. He just mauled a poodle or shitzu. Now what?
I feel terrible of course because I would never want to see another animal hurt. Its a fear that I walk with. Once in a while (which is too much for me) I find myself trying to scare off these dogs that their owners keep off leash. I do it for their own protection yet I feel like to bad guy with the bad dogs.
I also hate that my otherwise nice pleasant walks with my dogs are filled with stress because I feel like I have to keep my eyes and ears peeled for everything.
Any thoughts?
I have the same fear. Sutter has never hurt another dog yet, but I don't want it to ever happen. It's one of the reasons I've switched from trying to walk him to biking with him. when he's running, he doesn't notice other dogs, and if he starts to, I speed up. It has the added bonus of helping us both lose some extra poundage.
I always let the neighborhood kids pet him 1) if they ask and 2) if he's sitting nicely. We live on a corner with the intermediate school two blocks in one direction and the middle school two blocks in another. One of our neighbors used to have a boxer that would get out and growl, snap and nip at the kids as they went by. I don't want them to be afraid of Sutter like they were of her.
I'm very glad that my 3-yr-old has learned to ask first about petting dogs (I've been very strict about it; a samoyed nearly took one of my eyes out when I was four--he always ran loose in the neighborhood). Some people say yes, many say no. They have little dogs who aren't used to little kids, and she's learned to accept this.

My kids follow the same rules as your daughter Becca. At 6, and 2 1/2 they have NO FEAR of any animals, but they have learned to at least be respectful of dog owners and ask permission. The 6 yr old is learning some of what could happen should a dog not enjoy, or accept petting. Never been bit, thankfully.
I generally don't follow the 'rule' of not letting people pet my dog. He's a good boy, and has learned to sit calmly. He draws attention- not many DS's around the area. I think it's a nice way to introduce people to a strong, drivey breed. Koenig also appreciates the attention, but never seeks it out. Our EP however- can't hold still long enough!
