Lol, the mental image of alpha rolling one of those people is hilarious...maybe I should try it just to see what happens! Someone suggested telling people he bites, but that's not a good option for me. Aggressive dogs are prohibted from the park and if word got around that my dog supposedly bit people, I could be banned from bringing him back. I also don't want people to fear him (the public has a bad enough perception of "mean" breeds as it is right?), I just want them to give us space and let me train in peace. I will hopefully be ordering a vest this week so we'll see if it makes a difference!
I second the clown outfit idea. A dark scary clown. Everyone is scared of them. Really.
And put a muzzle on your dog to complete the picture. Seriously, people will probably be reluctant to approach a Hannibal Lecter dog. Teach him to bark on command. A barking muzzled dog will be very intimidating.
If you are reluctant to go to these extremes because you think people will see you as crazy, well, anytime you don't allow people to mob your dog they are already thinking you are crazy. So what's a little more crazy?
In our training classes, we had one very refined lady who had trained her 6 dogs to the nines...if people tried to pet her dog without permission, she would very loudly, in a Julia Child sort of voice, say "RUDENESS!!!"
Still makes me laugh, thinking about it. It works, though!
Here's what I tell strangers:
"If you come any closer, he'll bite you."
That statement, along with Fetz's demeanor ( and mine also, probably ) has kept him "pet-free" except at professional training seminars for several years.

It's the first thing that I pictured when I heard "...alpha rolling people..."
Not a watcher of Southpark, my first thought was along the lines of what other innappropriate dog "greeting" behaviors might migrate into the discussion on possible ways to to deter unwanted human attention....
