Thanks Connie! I will check and see if any of those stores might ship out to the west coast.
Do you think that the "Pets Go Raw" pre-made is on the pricey side? I don't know what would be average, but it seems like it could really get up there for a large dog.

Hey Phaedra, looking at the website for that raw brand, it sounds like its meant to be an all life stages food, but I don't find that specific phrase. Could be I'm overlooking it, but I know the Embark from HK is and if you contact them, they will tell you how much RMB or anything else you want to add in to use. They're really helpful.
How much per pound does it cost you to feed the kibble? Thats what I would compare the cost of the raw to.

I forgot about THK. I have used the Embark in the past as an addition to my raw diet. Mostly as an add on like abit of sauce. It is another one to consider. Like Connie said...it can be used with the RMBs that stretches the THK & also keeps the price of more expensive meats (thinking muscle meats here)on the lower side.
I think it is the consistancy that some dogs have a problem with, not the taste. But a puppy started on it would most likely not have any problem with its texture. I have actually fed it as a meal a few times, when I forgot to thaw out some meat.

I called a store that sells the raw, and they said it is an all life stages food.
As for the cost of the Orijen, I actually get it for about $50 for 30lbs after tax, because my friends own a pet supply store. They are planning on getting a super large freezer to get in large orders of the Pets go Raw, but as of now, I would have to buy it on a bag basis as opposed to bulk.
If I were to switch him to the pre-made raw for now, how long should I expect before I see a marked difference? I assume his stomach will get more upset from the switch as well, so I need to allow time for that obviously.

If it was me Phaedra, I would keep feeding the Orijin for right now unless he keeps getting actual diarrhea. He's so young and his diet has been changed 3 times allready, I would just wait for him to settle in a little more.

I would not change anything for now....but in the future...
You would also most likely need to add enzymes & probiotics to aid in the switch. Dogs that are fed kibble arn't making the quantity of digestive enzymes needed to digest RMBs on a regualr basis & often need help in the transitional period of a few weeks depending on the dog. It makes it easier for them to get their stomachs in tune with the diet.
Also just as an aside to to those feeding raw & may not know.....never give your dog antacids while on a raw diet. It changes the acid content & quality in their gut. Dogs have VERY acidic digestive tracks that will allow them to digest bone.

Hey Phaedra, not sure where you’re at (judging from your drive, sounds like you’re about 6 or 7 hours south of me), but I spoke with our new raw food lady about Honest Kitchen. She said she loves the stuff and had contacted the distributor but will not be able to have it shipped in at a reasonable cost, for the exact reasons mentioned - duty, taxes, exchange (today our dollar is actually higher though ). She said it’s not available anywhere in BC, even Vancouver, however one of her customers said they got it there, but never came back with the information.
She said she was looking into another one called something called Spurt, or Spark, or Shark or something. Sorry can’t remember the name, I really wanted Honest Kitchen. But I’ll ask again the next time I’m there. If it’s a decent dehydrated perhaps shipping within BC would be a little more cost efficient. I ended up ordering a box HK from Leerburg. As a matter of fact, it should be here today, I’ve got to get Bob to run to Post Office.
But I also wanted to mention, (sounds like you’re fairly new to BC) there are a lot of hunters here and even if you’re not into hunting, it’s a good idea to engage in conversation with these folks. We had a couple friends making room in their freezers and gave us enough meat for the boys for next couple of months, just need the rmbs, organs and supplements of course.
Having a bunch of moose/deer thrown your way can really help to keep costs down, not to mention my guys love it. All natural, good stuff.
From what Ann and Steve are saying, it’s probably best to stick with the Orijen for now. Maybe something to think about for future though.
Sounds like the little guy is settling in nicely otherwise. Gosh he’s cute.
