I'm all for the wake. And really impressed if your daughter loves Irish dancing like Barbara says. I'm pretty Irish but we don't really have much Irish culture out here.
Anyway Dennis, I'm still thinking and praying for you all. It's so hard. I'm so sorry
We generally bury dogs with newly planted trees as the headstone. The kids would pick out the tree (usually some shrub) at the nursery. Evergreens seem to do especially well with a dog at their roots.
About your dogs reacting to Maggie's absence, but not Erica's while you were gone for 6 weeks...
Were you with Maggie when they gave her the injection? Your dogs would certainly smell the oder on you, as well as pick up on your emotions, of course.
Time does not always heal, but the pain will fade. You gave her a good life, and the best gift you could have at the end. She's waiting for you, and your family at the bridge.
I am sure the dogs are reacting to all of the emotions in the home right now.
One of my co-workers put her cat to sleep Tuesday night. I came in to work with Drift on Wed morning and she would not leave Katie alone. She was at her side most of the day. It wasn't until later that I learned about the cat, as Katie did not let her emotions out or tell anyone. Drift, however, was reacting to the emotions that she felt and made herself available to make things better... which is her nature.
A ceremony will help speed the emotional recover and provide a bit of closure. It can be a time to talk about all of the great and/or silly things that Maggie did in her life.
dennis i wanted to add my sympathy/empathy for you and yours; it's never an easy decision, OUR pain isn't any less, but i'm sure Maggie appreciated you being there to ease her on down that road.
I'm so very sorry for your loss. She was a beautiful girl, and it sounds like she had a wonderful life after she joined your family. It's never easy to let our beloved friends go.......
