My first job, the Humane Society of New York, no kill.
Some dogs had been there years, were completely unadoptable, were insane. No kill is not perfect . Foster systems IMO are fantastic.

I don't even really look at Petfinder and the like any more because I can't really do anything at this point and it's just too depressing. I'm partial to the teenagers. I see healthy young dogs in shelters and I think "what a waste".
It's the reason I've gotten 3 dogs as young adults. I see the potential that is just waiting for someone to come along and tap it. Before I got Kenzi I was looking for a nicely bred pup. Then I saw her face on PetFinder. Young, eager and ready to go - and thrown away as a pup. I couldn't stop thinking about that face. All she wanted was a chance to be someones dog.

I worked at the Toronto Humane Society under President Tim Trow, who along with several supervisors, was recently arrested and charged after an investigation by the SPCA. He was SO fanatical about not euthanizing any animals, that cats were suffering literally to death in their cages, and there were dogs that had been there for years. YEARS in cages, some of them didn't even have runs because we were so pressed for space. To make matters worse, about 85 - 90% of the dogs were "pitbull-type", in a city that had just passed BSL. All that in the name of "No Kill". Having been there, I do not agree with that policy across the board. The fact is, some animals are not going to get adopted, and they don't deserve to live miserable lives because of someone's guilty conscience. That may seem harsh to some of you, but spend a year in an over crowded no-kill shelter and get back to me.

That is how I wish I had worded it. And "adoptable" in the case of surrendered adult "pitbull types" -- is, I am sorry to say, in many places, pretty much pie in the sky and nothing more than a technical term.

I agree with you Phaedra.
My Rotty is from the THS during that time, so i owe them a debt of gratitude because she was admitted with thousands of dollars worth of injuries and dog aggressive from the fight that caused them. Some shelters may have put her down i'm not sure, so for the fact that they did as much as they did for her is amazing to me. There did need to be changes, but i'm sure they were well intended for the most part but their methods were misguided. Some dogs can't be saved unfortunately and keeping them caged for life isn't better than death. The resources could go to helping dogs that have a chance of being re-homed.
like you said it comes down to their conscience not whats best for the animal.

I'm glad you got a good dog out of it. Dogs like that were labeled as "white level" dogs, and only a few of us were able to handle them, making things even harder.
Another HUGE issue there (and I'm sure other shelters as well), was misappropriation of funds. They spent almost $200,000 on an automated kennel cleaning machine - basically a giant dishwasher, that NEVER got used. It was such a ridiculous item. They survived on millions and millions of dollars of private donations only, and a lot of that money was so poorly used. Don't even get me started... But, luckily most of the shelter workers who fought so incredibly hard against Trow and his cronies are now on the board of directors and making big changes. I can certainly say that I was proud to be fired for insubordination by a man like Tim Trow.

I got a great dog, the women there set me up with a great trainer to help learn to manage her aggression issues and now she is a model canine citizen.
I'm glad to hear they are making big changes, myself and my family have made a large sum in donations to the THS over the years and it is a shame to see how it was squandered. The Crate washing machine sounds ridicules. i have one its called a hose and a bucket of soapy water... in extreme cases some bleach.

After reading and rereading this post and shedding too many tears, I have decided to never purchase another dog in my life.
It will be rescue from here on out.
With the help from Leerburg on how to deal with any issues.

I volunteer with rescues too and don't have much to add to this thread at this point, other than to say: you guys are great and I'm really glad to have found Leerburg and to be a member of this forum.
Happy holidays everybody - and good thoughts for all the great dogs (and cats) out there waiting in a shelter for a good home -

Ditto, I have 2 rescues and wouldn't have it any other way.
On a side note: When I adopted Shrek the shelter workers actually said "oh good he is getting adopted, he has been here for a while and we were beginning to think he would never find a home" ... I felt really really good when they said that now he is my little monster..lol
