Regarding face handling procedures - after mos of "training" , I was really bummed to get a growl over ringworm ointment. "You stay you miserable beast"- (you can't get that ringworm on 89 yr old Dad!)-a tone that worked with all past dogs (except ACD) worked for 3 ringworm applications, then I brought out the Christmas roast beef scraps.
It's not marker training when the beef is one inch from his nose.
A level of trust is missing between me and my dog. God forbid he'd needed a skin scraping.
I can't tell if it's lack of leadership on my part or a character flaw in the dog, but we have work to do.
I want to add "Roll Over" for both my dogs. We just trimmed their nails for the first time and it went well, but we don't have a cue for roll over and so after they were in their down, we just kind of pushed them over and fed them treats for every nail clip.
I've seen the rollover trained with markers by having the dog lay down on the floor on his side. Taking a treat you lure his head over his shoulder so that he follows the treat with his nose and begins the very beginning of the rollover motion. Mark/reward. Do this a few times (you have not added a command) and then begin making him twist over farther before you mark reward. Continue this until you have him rolling completely over before you mark reward. (This is all assuming your dog has been introduced to markers!)
After a few morning sessions of working on "bring" (dumbbell) and "hold" we just came in from our first attempt at BRING and HUP and he ACED it!!! (We really do need a happy dance icon!)
I'm not posting this as a brag but rather because it is the first time I've trained a more complex behavior and have used backchaining... IT WORKS!! LOL!
We started with the hup, then the bring the dumbbell inside the house, the muzzle hold and then hold the dumbbell. Now we are just putting it all together. We don't have the sit/hold after the return hup yet, but he definitely stood and held it until I said yes and took the dumbbell out of his mouth!!
It is just soooo cool to see a plan come together like this!!!

Juliana: i am going to implement behaviors i want them to do at home. They are pretty good pups but I will think of something. Is there something your dogs do you don't want them to? or no do you wish they would? Let us know what it will be.
