So basically, unless there are symptoms i.e., the dog is butt-skating or licking at the plumbing, AG's are not something that one routinely probes around to check, correct?
That's my POV. I do look, though, with every going-over.
but also "feel him up" from one end to the other, looking for lumps and bumps that fur hides. I even palpate the abdomen, figuring that even if I don't know what I am doing, I CAN notice something different from one check to the next. And I look between the paw-pads.
I look into the ears more often than this, however -- probably once a week minimum.
For what it's worth Cicero had none of the mentioned symptoms during the first infected glad. The only reason I noticed anything was wrong is because when he would go to the bathroom there were little drops of blood in the snow. No blood in the stool itself as I live in an apartment and have to clean up every time I would have noticed that. If there hadn't been any snow I might not have noticed. This time there was the licking and his butt smells which was never noticed before. There was also the blood. I didn't know the licking was a sign of it until now.
Thank you for the link, the internet is amazing.
All the dogs I recall with the disease were show-shaped (that low hock deal) GSDs.
It seemed a painful and difficult to manage condition, we referred several to the U.
My fellow was a straight backed GSD doing working trials.
Don't be too downhearted if one's dog gets the condition I found it quite manageable apart from the cost.
This has been a most informative thread for which I am grateful.

I have had to express Kasey's anal glands once a month since he was 4 months old. I tried the fiber route and it made no difference at all (he is raw fed too). He has environmental allergies and his derma vet told me that 'active' anal glands often goes along with allergies. Don't know how common that is, but it sure has been for him. If I don't do it every month, he scoots, licks and bites all around his anal area until I do it! It's not so gross once you get used to it, and I'm with Connie on doing it in the bathtub at bath time!

Usually just one nasty squirt. Not enough to fill a thimble. You can feel the bean sized gland is turgid; squeeze once or twice and you can feel that it's empty.
