There was a report out a few years back that identified a number of dog foods that contained trace amounts of sodium pentobarbatol -- the drug used to kill animals.
We have several options for people. There is a retired vet who owns a very large piece of property, and offers a burial service. Then there is also a crematorium we deal with that does group (no ashes back) and private (ashes back) cremations. Most people go for the burial service or private cremation in the winter, or bury themselves in the summer. When I lived in Toronto, it was always only general or private cremation.
I know that some of the SPCA shelters in surrounding towns also have their own crematoriums as a source of income, and do it at a reasonable price.
A private cremation for an XL dog through most small clinics costs $300+.
There appear to be associations between rendered or hydrolyzed ingredients and the presence of pentobarbital in dog food. The ingredients Meat and Bone Meal (MBM), Beef and Bone Meal (BBM), Animal Fat (AF), and Animal Digest (AD) are rendered or hydrolyzed from animal sources that could include euthanized animals.
That is, 'digest' and 'meat meal' really are mystery meats. I always wondered what the tankage wagon did with the animals they hauled away from the farm.
In 20 yrs of practice, I only used a euthanasia solution on a 3 or 4 cows. Every other one was shot, some by me,some by the owner. I did euthanize quite a few horses with these products, and many of them went to rendering.
That tells me there are euthanized pets on all those kibble samples. That is absolutely outrageous. I thought that practice was FINISHED in the early 90s.
I am blown away by that information.
