If your girl got out while in heat there is a chance she is pregnant.
For the life of me I can't figure out why you did not crate her instead of putting her in IN HEAT in an area she had escaped from before.
You might want to talk to your vet about a spay/termination.
Good call, Betty. Sooner is much better than later, too.
This is the time to step up and correct what you're going to find is considered by responsible owners to be an egregious lapse.
If obviously care very much for your family, and they are your first priority. BECAUSE of this, you NEED to take the dog to the vet, and talk about a spay/termination.
You do NOT want a litter of puppies, and all the time and expense, not to mention - UNWANTED puppies with a mystery stud. A c-section (if needed) costs about $1000, possibly more. Care, food, first vaccines for all the pups.
One vet visit could solve all that.
If you choose to keep in the long run, next time she's in season - CRATE her, if there is any chance she can get out, or another dog in, THEY WILL STOP AT NOTHING FOR NOOKIE!
If this were my dog, I would be at the vet for a surgical consult first appointment I could get.
As Betty pointed out, there is a majorly high chance that she is already knocked up. Any male in a five mile area knew she was in heat and was already on the look out for her. If you think she was crafty in getting out, imagine an intact male two towns over not only escaping, but making the journey to find her!
Since she got out more than once, its even possible that she may have gotten with more than one other dog.
Having an intact female is a huge responsibility. Most people can't pull it off without mistakes. That's why there are so many puppies euthanized in shelters every single day.
I understand that kids get sick and life gets crazy, but its better to see what you can do about it now than to wait.
