His mom was crazy, his dad was a ball psycho. They were what I wanted.
<thunk>
Just came up with the name for my next dog. Napster. You want him to steal music?
And make us both wealthy!

Edgar
I have always felt like Loki was the wrong name for Loki.
But Loki stuck and that is his name, like it or not.
We generally call him just Loke, or stink pinkle, or fatty mcbutterpants anyway.
OMG I LOVE nicknames...These are great! I've never had a dog that didn't have bunch of them. Almost worthy of a new thread imho.
Pets certainly give themselves their own nicknames! We had a cat that was originally named "Kali". Well, we always called her "little one", which morphed into "Onez" (pronounced "One's). Whenever we took her to the vet, they would always come into the waiting room and say "Oh-Nez"? I always joked that it was her Mexican alias!
My cat "Trout", I always called "Gi-Gi", and my dog "Scout", ended up being called "mr.poopy pants" because of his obsession for the... finer things! Or, sometimes "Shnoopes", because people always said he looked just like Snoopy. He was a great, but crazy and naughty, naughty, smart dog. Energy and drive or a JRT, and nose and attitude of a beagle. Yup, that's right. The rescue claimed he was a lab cross and would be about 75lbs. I got him about about 5 months old, and his full weight ended up being about 35 pounds. He lived life on the edge... his fave pastime was to chew broken glass, but it never seemed to cause any problems for him!
One morning, he was dead. Only 3 years old. Beagles are known apparently for heart and brain stuff.
Sorry, back to the OP.
Toro, had 2 nicknames - "Moose", and "TorBor". One of his dog friends was a smaller, very cool sweet dog named "Lucy". I use to take care of her for a week at a time, and I would call them "The Moose and The Goose".

When I pulled my dog out of his shipping crate in Minneapolis my girlfriend said, "Jeez, what a color, he's pink" - it just stuck. Mostly we call him "Pinker" because it seems you need 2 syllables somehow, and he's not a "pinky" at all.....

At last! How many times have I said to my senior-memory self "Ask Betty about Pinker's cool name" and forgotten!? (I don't know how many; I don't remember!)
I love that name.
And I agree with two syllables. JMO, and I am probably just crazy, but I have thought for ages that many dogs "get" two syllables faster. (Maybe I made that up. Who knows.)

Murphy has answered to Murp Murp, Bubba, Dorkus Maximus, Piggimus, Kerfuffle, Doggeh and the Grape (not sure where that last one came from).
I call Murphy's sire "Mr. Min" (because he's a Dober'min'). We would also call him "octopinsch" (which is now my email address) because he'd like to lay on his back, belly up, with his legs all sprawled every which way like an octopus.
Probably the most random nickname belonged to my dog, Kiefer. He was kind of a nut and was always hurting himself one way or another, and consequently found himself on antibiotics frequently. It gave him some nasty gas, so we started calling him "Stinky" Somehow it morphed into "Stinky McFiff".

This really is a fun thread. Some of you have me rofl (Mr. Fatty McButterpants!). I like to give dogs people names. I don't really care for names that are too cutesy and sweet. I've known too many Sugars and Preciouses. I also don't understand people giving a new dog a name that belonged to a previous dog. Seems unfair to the new dog.
I have a (bad) habit of really extending and rhyming a name. So my dog Savanna was sometimes known as Savanna Banana Havana Copacabana. Natasha, whom we call Tash for short, is sometimes known as Tash By Gosh from Oshkosh.
What about middle names? Do you guys give your dog middle names? I do. Savanna was Savanna Lassie which she earned by her habit of seeing something exciting out the front window, running to my office to "tell" me, turning back toward the front room, trying to get me to follow her and go look, just like Lassie telling everyone that Timmy has fallen in the well.
Being involved in Doberman rescue, I see way too many Dobes named Zeus or Apollo. I loved "Magnum, P.I." but some names are really just worn out. Having said that, I think naming your dog is a very personal thing, and people have a multitude of reasons for the names they choose!

Tasha was simply a litter T pup. I picked the name out of an online baby book and figured that I might give her a different name later on. Then when I met her it seemed to fit. A little tough, a little sweet and definitely feminine.
Then I found out that there are like seven million other German shepherds named Tasha. Probably for the same reasons. But it was too late, Tasha she is.
She also answers to Chicken Wing. I have no clue why I started to call her that but she seems to like it.
Tashiki and Tasha Magoo have also stuck. Those were not my doing, but I have to admit that I find myself using both nick names all the time.

Tracy- I was looking for a companion, buddy, low/mod drive , If I change his name now, is there hope for this?
What would you call him, Tammy? Lumpy? Napper? Somnolent? Drowsy?
I usually pick names associated with Moore. I had a Lab and two Papillon’s years ago, Dudley, Dinty, and Demi{perfect because she was tiny} next will be Gimme and No.

Fatty Mcbutterpants came about because this dog is always STARVING.
Today he had a big breakfast around 8 and by noon he was moaning at me and bringing me his plate. When I ignored him he flopped on his back at my feet and starting moaning.
When we eat he lays across the room looking at us out of the corner of his eye with drool running out of his mouth.
He has polished off entire boxes of cereal, bags of dog food, and would literally eat himself to death given the opportunity.
He was too skinny for his first 4 years, but he has filled out some and while he is still thin he looks like a fatty compared to how he was before.
