My point was how much I hate to hear "I'll make damned sure he respects me" or "Disrespect me, will you?!" (as if respect comes from physical overpowering and punishment).

I know I always keep bringing her up (she's one of my heroes) but Temple Grandin has two great books on the emotional life of animals--Animals in Translation and Animals Make Us Human. Thoughtful insights into each of the basic emotions that she believes all animals show.
Check, thumbs up, a-okay Connie. Too many people do confuse what either of the words means. Both in dealing with their own brethren as well as with their canine friends.

Yes, with regard to dogs, "I'll make him respect me" too often (usually, I'm afraid) means "I'll make him cower in fear when I come close."
