You would get attached to the guinea pigs, Barbara. Their gestation period is
60 days or so, I think, and the "sow" only has a litter of 2 or 3, right Melissa? Plus the little ones are ridiculously cute.
60 days which results in a pup that is fully formed, eyes open, and running around. Average litter size is 2-4 with a high of 6-7. The babies are very cute, but as they say, real fishermen don't feel sorry for the bait. The real plus of cavies is you can house them together in a really nice social herd of sows and one boar.
Ivermectin kills mites.
Isn't there some blood test that can tell you if your dog is sensitive to ivermectin?
My understanding was there is a genetics test which runs about $1,000 - they did not mention a regular ol' blood test.
Would you say the Ivermectin would absolutely solve the mite issue, IF that is what Falcon has? The other dog scratches only occassionally, no where near like Falcon... they were both being treated since Scabies is so contagious.
You Have Probably already done this (treat environment), but the symptoms you describe sound so like, scabies, or mange:
From Dr Foster Smith:
"In addition to treating the dog, the environment such as the dog's bedding can be treated with a residual insecticide (e.g.; permethrin). Since Sarcoptes scabiei is easily transmitted between animals, all dogs in contact with an infected animal should also be treated. Because of the length of the life cycle and ability of the mite to live off of the animal, treatment must continue for a minimum of 4 weeks.
Because of the damage to the skin in sarcoptic mange, many dogs also have bacterial and or yeast infections. These need to be treated as well."
All I know is if you have a cow with mange (a 1000-1400lb animal) and you put a thimblefull of Ivomec on its back that is the END of the mange. I really don't know too much about dogs, I'm sorry.
Was there some change after the lime sulfur dip?
Did winter come? I'm thinking if it was an environmental allergy perhaps spring has come and he has worsened.

It's actually only $70.
??? I'd do $70 in a heart beat. The regular vet (not the allergist) told me he thought it was around $1,000. I'll call and confirm with them tomorrow. I'd expect to find out he's never done the test and was just pulling a figure out of thin air...grrrrrrr.

Well Betty, I'm calling the allergist again in the AM.
Falcon has been itching since Oct. or November...
After the first sulphur dip I thought we saw a few days of less scratching and was really thinking we had found the problem. However, after the subsequent dips I've seen no change. We bathe first, then dip and don't dry/wipe off. (Needless to say, we spend a few hours outside before coming back in the house.)

Yup, just follow the "Testing" link in my other post and you'll find the info that you need!
