Forgive me for the last part of that post, I old and my mind drifts into nothingness sometimes. But like it was said, at lease something positive would come out of it. I like optimism.
The plight of the GSD may not happen with the JRT because people think a small dog that has high drive and sorta aggressive as cute and a wanted quailty. But a big dog, people are afraid of so they try to breed it out, GSD,Dobbies and Rotties almost ruined them.
I'm shocked that people don't research before they go and buy a dog, they see these well trained dogs on TV and think this how all Dals, JRT and Bull Matiffs are. Or they will buy a puppy and when it grows into a dog they send them to the pound. Stupid.
It excite me to see my dogs lite up when I pull out a ball (it scares some people) or issue the watchem or find em command. Weather diving in water or jumping out of a car window to protect or flecth. I like seeing the power in their effort
their seriousness in cause. That what I like about some breeds, is their intent on getting a job done, or willingness to please.
If I could get a woman like my dog... Well I better quit, don't want to go there (backing out the door qucik).

Being so Logical you probably never wondered what if... its either on or off 0 or 1.
As we all know if placed under a magnified glass for just one day, we all would have some strange traits and would be able to wear the "Weirdo tag" or the straight jacket Tuxedo proudly.
But as mention, forgive me for exposing my delusion, that my dog loves me better then food.
Talk about delusion my wife said that her dog (now deceased) would not eat her face (if she was dead). Not that we talk about this subject a lot, the piont I'm making is, if given the choice of starving would a domestic dog eat the hand that use to feed him. There is really no question, but sometimes we try to make dogs think like humans, it's dogs.
What was this topic about? Oh weak and strong nerve dogs.
My adult son was a swinging his PR-24 baton (he a cop), my male GSD just kept walking toward him (not growling and had a wince on his face) right up to almost to the point of contact. My son stopped and patted him, saying "Dad did you see that, he must think he's a real bad ass". The dog after get his strokes went on to explorer other parts of the yard and let my son practice (never interupted again). Is this strong nerves or confident in his human not to strike him un-necessaryly or was it that make my day attituded? Like I said he wasn't growling his tail was up waging and motion was more of a prancing yet wincing cautious. I was just watching thinking I know he smarter then that and Dwayne (my son) better not hit my dog. Everything worked out but I still wonder what was that dog thinking??? or trying to prove?
Sometimes I think this dogs main weakness is me, not being a better trainer, as a matter of fact I've been (tactiful) told that numerous times. But he's mines and he'll have put up with me, until one of us give up the ghost. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" />

Goodogu
If your dog knows your son very well, he was probably waiting for your son to throw that thing he was twirling around.

I'll except that as one conclusion, but thats not check mate. I check you with this, then why not come back to play, When he resumed practice, he wasn't given the command to stop playing "enough".
And the dog does not appoarch the object being swung to play fetch he stands away waiting to for the object to be released from your hand. So Watson, close but no cigar.
And what about my other question Doctor Watson, if followed for a day, would you be a canidate for the straight jacket Tux, like me? Just kidding. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Sounds a little tougher than I was reading in to it.
<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> Good meds keep me out of the srtaight jacket, but I'm positive someone is following me, just watching. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

I believe not all stable dogs are difficult to work with. I suppose it also depends on the breed.I have a male Rott with really strong nerves. He never shows any of the signs that have been mentioned in the various messages, and he is great with people, regardless of knowing them or not. He always approaches them and lets them pet him and play with him, as if they owned him, however he really takes it seriously whenever we are doing protection work. I know that for some specific protection or guarding jobs, a dog with some level of sharpness is more desired.
Greetings from Mexico!

Oldearthdog, I once saw an interview with the owner/trainer of Moose (Eddie on Frasier). She said he "was" a typical JRT. It just took a lot of hard work interrupted with a lot of exercise to get him to perform for TV. Unfortunately, what the public see's on Frasier is Eddie doing a scene, nice and calm, with an almost human personality, complete with cute facial expressions, etc. and immediate compliance to Martin, Frasier, or Daphne's commands.
That and other appearances in popular movies and on TV always results in a population explosion of whatever breed of dog is the "flavour of the month".
A good prospective dog owner will not make a decision like that. But there are enough of "the others" out there to cause irresponsible breeders to flush the market with the chosen breed, responding to $$$ and demand.
