Chip, you might want to sit down with the vet and ask what the prognosis is beyond day by day but stable for now.
Often the vet will wait for the client to ask, fearing that the client may not be ready for anything but today's condition.
JMO. I'd ask what the likelihood of a quality extension of life is. "More tumors than expected" and "complicated" sound a little like surgery might not have been suggested if the full extent had been known.
I'm just saying ..... you don't want to put your wonderful girl through anything that doesn't have a good chance of being worth it.
I don't mean to push this. I just mean that, having been there, I know you want to have all the facts and opinions and not go blindly ahead.
Please believe that I'm thinking only of her and of you.
And who knows? It might be a reassuring talk.

Thanks everyone. The first conversation I want to have is simply that I be alerted if I am ever going to have to move a dog in that much pain again. I can't believe a place would even do a surgery that major then call the owner at the end of the day and say "okay, it's closing time, you need to take her to a vet open all night now." I would have just had the surgery done there in the first place.
I just got the call from the 24 hr. vet and she made it through the night. That was what I was most worried about. I really like the vet she's at now. But he said I might have to move her AGAIN today. He's worried about his overnight staff being bitten -it's just a tech by herself at night. Rose isn't a biter, but I guess all bets are off when in this much pain. Still, I can't imagine they don't deal with far worse? I mean, she can't even stand, how dangerous can she be? Eh, I don't want to hear what I don't want to hear, I'm a mess today.

Oh Chip, I'm so sorry to hear about Rose and the terrible time you're having with this whole ordeal. Hindsight is always 20 20 but you're making the best decisions you can.
I know that messed up feeling well. It's really hard to focus on anything at times like this and the information you do want is usually slow in coming.
I agree with Connie. Ask questions, lots of them. Maybe even right them down as they come to mind.
For your sake, try and stay focused on happier times. Know that Rose is a fighter and hope for the best. Sending all the good vibes I can.
I'd also be making sure she has the best pain medication possible, lots of it.
Thinking of you guys.

Yes, and please know that you're in our thoughts and hearts, Chip and Rose.
Oh, man ..... what a trial. I'm so so sorry about this ordeal.
XOXO

Chip, I am so sorry to hear about how difficult this has been for Rose and for you. I, too, hope they will be very generous with the pain meds and sedation, to keep her as comfortable as possible while she gets through the post-surgical pain.
As Connie said, you have done everything right so far, even though there have been some unexpected surprises for you. I know you love Rose unconditionally and will make the best decisions for her. Your friends on this board are with you in spirit as you go through this ordeal.

So sorry to hear what a difficult time you have been having thru all this. I can't even imagine how awful having to move her was like. Sometimes life just sucks! No way around it.
We know that you will to make the right decisions for your dear Rose dog. They are not always easy ones to make, as we all have had to make them at one time or another. Just follow your heart. You are both in our thoughts & prayers. Hang in there.Be strong for Rose.

Hey guys, just wanted to update. It's been really, really bad -Rose is in critical condition at the 24 hour clinic. I've had the worst day of my adult life, and I know I am going to be unclear on some details. Rose had 6 tumors, so one whole side of mammary tissue was removed and part of the other. And the vet did remove the uterus during the spay because she said there were follicles in it or something. I will get the details on that later. That was yesterday morning.
I got the call that everything went well, but she was in a lot of pain. When I came to take her home, the vet sat me down, explained that there were more tumors than expected, it was far more complicated, etc. and presented me with bill. Now I had the next set of choices; take her home, take her to the 24 hour clinic, or leave her at the vet, where no one would be overnight, but she would be drugged and coned. Since just moving her was so painful, I opted for "C" and made the worst decision of my life. When the staff got there this morning, she had "De-cyst"? Never saw the word she said in writing, but she had busted through her sutures and opened her belly up really badly. They did another operation on her this morning, and I took her to the 24-hour emergency hospital just tonight. You never want to carry a stretcher with your own screaming dog into an emergency clinic. I would have had them do the surgery to begin with if I knew I was going to have to move her. That is the only thing I feel like my vet should have been more upfront about.#1 that she might have to be moved, and #2, the owner has to deal with it. I would have 100% had the surgery done there before signing up for putting my poor dog through this. She's so special, and was just SO painful and delirious. All I can hear is her screaming.
Oh my gosh, Chip, that is so awful, I am so sorry! I agree your vet should have told you she might need to be moved for an overnite stay. And then for the clinic to think it would be ok to leave her there...bad call. I think your instincts about this vet from the beginning are correct and for the future you may want to find a new one.
In the meantime, I wish you the best in this horrible situation.

Wow, hearing this, I am so grateful for my 24 hr. vet and their excellent protocol. They treat their patients like a human hospital - visitation until 10pm every nite (later if they know you), and you can call with updates all nite long. Not to mention moving a dog because it 'may' bite...geez, my vet's tech got bitten by Enzo when they went to take him out for his neuter at 11 mos., never was it an issue - they blamed themselves for not handling it properly. They barely make me muzzle him when we have appointments. Reading this, I do not and will not ever take that for granted.
What's making me really crazy is, don't these vets think that the constant moving around from place to place is a serious detriment to her recovery?!?! Ugh.
Chip, once again, I am so sorry. You should not have to endure this post-procedure insanity especially with what I know it's costing you. But I believe if Rose has made it this far, I think she will continue to heal.

I'll say.
Every time I think about this, I tear up. I can't imagine how angry and outraged you feel.
I wish I/we could do more, but I know we're thinking about you both and sending healing thoughts to Rose.

The tech could call you at night, right? If anything came up? You'd come right over. As ludicrous as this "might bite" thing is, I'd do anything not to move her yet again.
