I also don't think that the modern purebreed dog fancy does all that much for the benefit of dogs...too much of it is focused on nothing but looks -- and exaggerated looks at that.
Worst of all is intentionally breeding genetic deformities that are incompatible with health. I can think of several breeds that simply should not exist in their present for.
Some of which would ALL DIE off within One Generation, unless EVERY brood continued to be delivered by Caesarean Section...

^ sounds great.....our growth in science, understanding genetics, data mining defects, correlation, data-base matching, instant communication etc have really paid off in the dog world. things could have got a bit grim there for awhile.
glad the AKC was on it, saved so many working breeds, nobody dropped the ball at all, not even so much as a fumble, the forefathers could not even conceive how we have propelled things forward this far from such primitive beginnings.
lets all take a bow to the imaginary applause.
Peter, I often cannot tell when you are being serious and when you are joking. I hope the above post was tongue-in-cheek. I completely agree with the subsequent comments by Tracy and Candi.
My own feeling on the question of what's the best dog breed in the world is that there is no one best breed. It's purely individual preference, depending on what you want from a dog. For the last almost-30 years, the best breed for me has been the Doberman, but of course they are not for everybody. And there are many other breeds I admire and would like to own, as well as many I wouldn't be remotely interested in, even though they may be perfect for someone else.

YES, my current rescue Doberman with her natural-born ears & tail, whom I consequently named "Adobe-She's-A-Dobie" for the benefit of folks who can't recognize a Doberman that is NOT cropped & docked, is presently The WORLD'S GREATEST Dog for me !!!
BTW, Adobe is still "channeling" my last dog (an utterly fearless HIGH prey drive Akita spay) by running off a MOUNTAIN LION near our house the other day, LOL

mongrelized to the max is what I was taught is "wild type ". Think coyote.
medium sized , GSD thick short coat, prick ears, sandy color.
One of our neighbors had a dog like this when I was younger. She was very red--like a red fox--but other wise about the size and general shape of coyote. She was a sweet, submissive, playful dog, and had great fun in an open neighborhood with lots of kids.

Heck, they can't even breed without assistance so they'd never even get to the point of needing a c-section without human intervention.

Favorite dog; I'm all about loving the one your with....someone should write a song about that.
As far as breeding and losing the working traits..... responsible breeders work to improve the breed, the thing is what's an improvement in one breeders mind may be detrimental to the breed in another breeder's mind both have puppy buyers who are looking for the traits they offer so with demand comes the variety of emotional, mental type and depending on your opinion working or non working examples of the breed. I do think physical type is pretty consistent however; there are definitely differences from one kennel to the next and one country to another. Wow, that's a lot of thinking.... I stand by "love the one your with". It doesn't tax your brain.
