Hello all,
Thought id provide you all with an update!!
Progress is going well, but slowly. He returns the toy slowly to me now. I discovered his limit is about 3 retrieves then I end the game on a big positive note, give him some food and put the toy away.
Working from ME's DVD power of playing tug, it indicates clearly to me that tug with my amstaff will never be a functional reward. He is a chowdog first and foremost and toys will never create that excitement in him like a high drive Mal. However, engaging in a good game of tug is teaching him that I'm fun over the toy, which is what i wanted.
Slowly but surely, we will get there Next goal is focused heeling!
Well, part of the lesson from ME's DVD power of playing tug, was that the play has to be fun for the dog. These have to be reward "events" that excite the dog. If the dog is not having fun perhaps there is a little you could add to the excitement. Frustration? Jump around and be "bigger than life"? He shows a lot of analogies to his bite work.
