Pred is like a miracle drug, and for the time they are on it, they seem like a whole new dog, but weaning them off it, and watching the old problems return is hard.
I am so sorry for this news Debbie, and I know you will do the right thing for your girl, I have been thinking about you both these last few days.
Give her a kiss and a stroke of her sweet head from me, I am truly sorry that you are having this nightmare.

I'm so sad about this, Debbie. It is one of the most difficult decisions to take. Like Bob says it's not over so quickly.
I've had once a cat who had an awful diagnostic. The Vet recommended to put her down. But we simply were not able to decide so quickly over life and death. We consulted a second Vet, who recommended the same. We then spent hours and hours on the internet and red of another illness which shows exactly the same symptoms, except that it goes without fever.
Our cat was without fever. So we consulted a third Vet, who really listened to us. He knew the two illnesses which can so easily be confounded. She recieved this time the right meds, recovered and lived 6 more happy years completely healthy.
Of course I don't want to say with this not to do it, if one has no more other choice. Sometimes we have to euthanize an animal to free it from so much suffering. I had to take this decision three times - years ago - but tears come still, when I think of it.
We all here are thinking of you, Debbie, and we know you'll not rush into a final decision. But if it has to be, you'll be able to go through the inavoidable with all your love for your dear dog. I'm still hoping.
“If you can keep your head when all around you are losing theirs, then you are a leader” – Rudyard Kipling |

I'm so sorry, Debbie. I was hoping -- as I know all of us were -- that the news would be good and it would turn out to be something treatable. My heart is breaking for you. I know you will make the best choices for Sasha in this difficult situation.

Oh, Debbie... If the Pred works a temporary Miracle and gives Sasha some GOOD quality of life long enough for her to have a little more Happiness with you, then I would go for it -- But if not, then I know you will make the right decision with her BEST in mind.
If only these Tragic Choices would get easier with each new necessity, but alas, they only get HARDER every time -- At least I believe wholeheartedly in The RAINBOW Bridge, so it is my firm conviction that all animals return to our Maker in Peace and JOY ... Prayers here for you Both.

I spoke with my vet this morning and we went over the possible scenarios. I asked about giving her a whooping big dose of cortico steriods this evening that would give her (hopefully) some good time till tomorrow, have her special day and then let her go. Even if she improves dramatically, I know it will only be temporary and I don't think I can watch her go downhill again.
This is the plan for her special day.
She'll get a can of tripe and some roast chicken for breakfast. Hope she has an appetite.
We'll go to the park for a short, slow walk. Chasing squirrels is generally discouraged, but this time she'll be allowed to try if she wants to.
Then to Burger King to get some chicken nuggets. She loves them but normally I only allow her to have 1 or 2 tiny pieces. This time she gets half of them. (I get the other half.)
McDonalds where we'll each get an ice cream cone rather than her getting just the last little piece of mine.
Then off to the vet to send her on her way to the Rainbow Bridge. I know Sierra (my previous dog) will be there waiting to greet her and show her the ropes.

I hope you both can spend the day peacefully together. I admire your plans and the strength you show. Like everyone else, I hoped for something easy or fixable. Thank you for taking the time to keep us informed, I'm sure it wasn't easy. May your time together be a blessing!

Very sorry to hear the news, Debbie. I know how tough a decision like that is and my heart goes out to you. You're doing the right thing.
