Michael,
Ya know, there wouldn't be anything wrong at all just going in as an enlisted soldier. With your college education, they'd probably give you E-4 right off the bat. Sign up for a four year tour and get the experience that you're looking for, plus you'd get to see the world ( admittedly, it'd be parts of the world that are real, real, crappy ).
Consider joining as an MP with the 82nd Airborne Division, those jump wings might get you extra points on hire someplace - ya never know.
Actually, Fetz chasing you isn't bad at all.
Now having him catch you....yeah, that's pretty bad.

Micheal,
Will is right, you would be an E-4 upon entering, and in about 2 1/2 yrs an E-6. That is if you went infantry. Infantry is the fastest promoting MOS in the Army. Also, the Army has a program to pay back ALL your college loans if you do (1) tour enlisted usually infantry. That would be a damn good resume for law enforcement, experience, discipline, and the educational background. Being more mature in age you would advance REALLY fast (in the army). I'v seen it over and over again. You'd be in leadership roles before you know it. I'm still active duty and let me tell you 30 is nothing, I have seen older, and 30 is quite common these days for newbies. I just had lunch yesterday with a friend of mine who is a drill sergeant at Ft. Benning, and that came up and he has 4 recruits in his platoon 30 or older. You already have something to offer the army with your experience in life, and believe me that extra 10 years, will goto serve you well and will make it easier for you to adjust to life in the military. I'v met actors 34yrs old who wanted to join after 9/11. He was a E-3 driving a lamborgini to work!! LOL seriously. Don't worry, you won't be an outcast, but an asset.

Dennis, quite an endorsement you are for the Navy. Nice.
Michael, listen to what everybody is saying about enlisting. Besides, unless the rules have changed (Chris, help me out), OCS straight out of basic is a recruiters selling tool. In my experience it does not happen - you go to basic, think you will apply to OCS, instead you finish AIT, go do your job, and 4 years later when you are an E-6 if you still want OCS you can apply for it then. Also, if you ever want to work with dogs, you will shoot your chances to shit by becoming an LT. If you want to set yourself up for law enforcement outside the Army, enlist for four years, 11b with airborne and RIP in your contract. You do not want to go to the 82nd, they are just legs with wings . Go to the 75th.

Michael,
All the services have law enforcement jobs and ignore the ribbing we are giving each other. Interservice rivalry has been going on for years and it is most always given in a good hearted brotherly way. Each service has its particular "unpleasantnest", joys and traditions. When you decide to enlist in whatever service, give it your best and you will do well.
We havn't heard from USCG yet, Any of you mud ducks out there?
