And i also meant that if i am not there , then i dont mind if the dog doesnt let go until i arrive.
if it meens keeping the baddy away from my wife and kids.or long enough for them to get away and safe.
Ok but the reality of the situation is just like a bullet wound in the arm it can kill you. The movie shows a guy that gets shot in the arm in one scene running and almost healed in the next frame. Thats not what happens, we are really like a ballon you punch a hole in it and it deplets.
If you don't stop the bleeding, the person dies.
A dog hanging on to a suspect arm waiting for you
he could bleed to death.
Now we have a 3 yr old grandaughter that we see every few months, because they live in Scotland and we in England.
That brings me to a quick question
Would this be a potential problem for a protection dog? Yes.
My reply
Dave - I use to have dogs just like yours, I felt the dog was part of the family. My dogs played with the neighborhood kids 5-11 yrs. old every child that met him loved him and he them. But strange adults or teen agers could not come in my back yard or approach my kids/his kids. This was a black GSD but I didn't know what he was capable of or if he would actually engage. And I didn't really want him to, but I thought he would??? If that make scents? If he was barking at someone I had to go get him.
I had another GSD/husky mix that loved my boy and daughter, never showed any aggression. I remember telling this guy that was going to work on my fence that the dog is ok, and won't bite a fly. The guy put his hand on the top rail of the gate, the dog jumped up almost bit him. He shouted " I thought you said he wouldn't bite"! I learned that if you don't know what the dog will do, don't assume.
The dogs I have now most people know that can't touch them and most don't want to, the average person. There are some that may see them sitting and want to pat them, I usually will tell them "no they can't" and if they move too fast the dogs will tell them. But the thing is even after that I can shut them down with a command.
Knowing what the dog is capable of give you fore sight to avoid potential problems, control to handle a unfore seen problem (like the ignoring my, No you can't pet them and getting barked at)", to a full charge call back, on other dogs, cat, deer or people that invade our space. Or I can ask that they totally ignoring it if I catch sight of it first.
Now the other thing is if I see a potential problem like a group of loud teenagers or saleman coming to my front door I can tell them "Its ok" and the dogs will just watch intensely.
What are the benifits of this? Its control of the animals under any or most circumstances.
Whats the down side? You have to be constantly be aware of there is a safety factor, that exist.
You have to teach people how to act around them.
The dog may not see your buddy trying to scare you as funny as he thought it would be. Or him just running up snachting up your child. Downside and Plus you have teach caution.
Or an agressive saleman or drunk trying to get into your house. You don't have to argue much, my wife usually just says, I said no or I don't need any or no you can't use the phone, but if you got any question you can argue with my friends here. End of conversation!! Upside clearing out men folks hearing, she means no.
So you have added security around you, but just like a gun they need to be safely handled and be secure away from the public and situations that could provoke them.
With new guest around the house I'd crate my dogs and slowing introduce them if my guest and their kids they are staying for a week or longer.
There is a lot more responcibility when a dog is trained but you have a lot more control.
This is just my dope.
