Just a little update...I know this thread is pretty old....
I decided to get the Chevy Silverado Crew Cab. With all of the sales these days, the price and timing seemed right.
I will be getting a cap soon, and now I'm wondering about the differences between fiberglass and aluminum. Does one perform better than the other when hauling dogs and in what way?
I didn't realize there were so many choices in caps, so what would be the sort of things I should look for when making a choice??
Thanks in advance, and thanks again for all of the wonderful suggestions from everyone who had responded to my initial query <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Jeannette,
No need to apologize about the age of the thread, it's not even a year old.
I make those moderator comments when someone comments out of the blue on a thread that's like three years old and all the original posters haven't posted in years, then posting a reply in that long-dead thread becomes just silly. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />
There's actually a weird definition for posters that do that ( much to the irritation of Moderators ):

That's funny, Will! I remember seeing the whole list of different types of forum posters before, always good for a laugh. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
As for toppers, I would recommend a fiberglass one over aluminum. It's more of a personal preference type thing. However I would assume that unless insulated, the aluminum topper might act like an oven...whereas, just by the type of material, the fiberglass one would have some insulating value of it's own, not to mention that it probably cools down faster. BUT, the downfall of the fiberglass is that it can warp over time and cause fitment and or cosmetic problems.

Cool <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" /> Will, and very funny little guy in that link <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
Mike, thanks so much for the feedback, that is very good information, which I appreciate. Good points about the insulating value of the fiberglass, which would be important in both hot and cold conditions.
I know the fiberglass ones are more expensive, so perhaps they do come with some sort of warranty/guarantee?
Thanks again for the feedback <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

here is the differentce in the two types by jime walczak from 4 wheel drive/ off roading
Truck tops are typically made of fiberglass or aluminum. The differences between the two are highlighted below:
Are made from custom molds designed specifically for your truck make, model, and year.
Contour around the cab of your vehicle for a nice custom fit and a sleek look.
Start in the $1,000 price range.
Come painted to match the paint code of your vehicle, as specified by the truck manufacturer.
Aluminum tops
Are made from a standard mold and is only made to fit the bed of your truck (front of the cap may be taller or shorter than the cab of your truck).
Do not contour around the truck's cab.
Start in the $400 price range
Have only standard colors to choose from.
in my opinion i would spent the extra for a fiberglass, looks nicer, and can match your paint of the truck

Great, I think I will definately go for the fiberglass! Other than price, it doesn't seem like the aluminum would be a good choice.
Do they all come with windows that open on the end that is nearest the cab of the truck?
The truck I bought actually did have the sliding rear window, which most dealers said was no longer available! It was one of the reasons we bought the truck, my husband hates AC <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />
Thanks!

When you look at different models of toppers, you'll be able to find all sorts of window configurations on all 4 sides of the topper. It's not a big deal to get one with a sliding window.
And last I heard, sliding rear windows were still a factory option from ALL of the major truck manufacturers.

I really like these tops, they are canvas and you can roll up the sides durring the hot summer days. It also tlooks like some of them are stowable/removeable allowing yuo to pick up a couch or other item that may not fit under a standard cap.
pickup soft tops

I used to have a Expedition, was great. Had one of these in it. http://www.frontiernet.net/~kennel/model901.html
Easy in and out. Weight only about 150 lbs and VERY easy to clean.
I'm actually selling mine...half the price of new...was only used for about a year...I don't have the truck anymore so don't need the kennel.
