My husband and I took 2 1/2 years to decide on the dog we wanted. While my husband rarely hikes the back country, I do all the time. I carry a pistol and rifle. Rarely have I seen folks in the places I go with my dog. I decided on a personal protection dog as I am female and the back mountains of Idaho can contain some odd folks.
I walk my dog on leash at all times, except back country hiking. But, a word of warning--if you dog is not trained with encountering big game, don't let him/her off lead. You don't know how the dog will react, especially if it senses danger. We took a year and half to expose our pup to everything. Since we live in the mts. our dog sees elk, deer, moose, bear frequently. He has learned to never pursue and walks to our side and lets us know when something is around. He is especially cautious with bear--when he met his first one (a 2 yr. old cub) he was curious but respectful. All we had to say was no and sit and down and he never pursued and never has.
We are fortunate he listens so well and has never chased game. We do notice that when he smells mt. lion he is really sketchy. He hates the scent and begins to search the trees nervously. His hackles may rise and he walks leaning up against me and slightly ahead of me. If the scent gets too strong he will cut in front of me and stop me. He has gone so far as to grab my wrist and tried to turn me around. He's only seen one cougar, so I can't figure out why he is so keen on avoiding them. But, it is the once scent that he really wants to avoid. Smart dog!
Train your dog well b/4 he ever goes off lead. I never let our dog off when folks are around. Back country is different and I KNOW he doesn't pursue game. Good luck. You will be safer with a well trained dog by your side. But, nothing protects better than man made weapons. If someone is determined to hurt you they will disable your dog and then you had better be armed and be willing to use what you carry. Better safe than sorry.

Linda, we do always carry a pisol with us if we can, but like I mentioned before, it isn't allowed in all the places where we hike. Hopefully, the dog will already BE well trained, so we will just have to keep him sharp by practicing with him often (daily for basic ob). And as for the off-leash issue, he, like my current dog, would be wearing an e-collar at all times, both on and off leash.

Following is the e-mail I got back re: Orry, at Tarheel Canine, the dog we are thinking about.
I think he'd be a good dog for PSA, he has strong nerves, excellent
grip, and is a nicely temperamented dog as well.
He has the "A" stamp from Czech Republic (for his hips), SVV I and SVV II, on the
father side he goes back on Dasty Gries, Gina Korbelbach, Yoschy
Dollenwiese, and on the bottom goes back on Fero Z.H., Harro Lechrainstadt etc.
He was probably rushed through the titles, he was 82/77/91 on SVV1 and
80/81/90 on the SVV2. Control issues most likely - he has strong drive,
and a lot of confidence.
His actual pedigree and scorebook can be viewed (I hope) at http://www.angelfire.com/tx6/shrinercpa/orry.html
In the paragraph that says he was probably rushed through the titles, what does "control issues" mean?

Control issues means that his tracking and OB scores were...well...the pits. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />
But yes, those could well be a result of bad training versus fundamental soundness. Take an experience dog trainer with you when you look at the dog and they should be able to determine that with 15 mins. of working the dog a bit.

Someone else said "control issues" could mean that he didn't seem to be able to really control himself and was a little over-exhuberant or didn't release his grip the first time commanded or something like that.
Either way, would this be something that training could remedy pretty easily, ie: working with him on his weaknesses, or is it just how he is you think?
His scores are in that e-mail, and the actual card itself is on the website I posted. What are the requirements to pass the SVV1 and 2? I don't know how to read the scores.
Take an experience dog trainer with you when you look at the dog and they should be able to determine that with 15 mins. of working the dog a bit.
I'm assuming you mean experienced in schutzhund or protection work, and not just an obedience trainer, right? Hmmm. I don't know any. Would Jerry be honest with me about the dog? He's the one who wrote the e-mail.

THANK you for posting that. I searched for over an hour to try to find the rules and regulations or anything on the SVV and could not. At least this gave me some idea of what it is.
Orry is priced at $5,500, but if we go to see him and decide we want him, I was going to offer a little less. How low should I go so they will counter offer and not laugh in my face? lol
