..... once again he brought it into our bedroom and crunched it down on the carpet. I don't really want raw meat on the carpet in the bedroom or anywhere else in the house, but it's difficult because in the morning I'm busy getting ready for work which makes it hard to monitor his eating.
I don't really want food of any kind on the carpet either.
The only dog who hasn't yet been well-trained enough to keep the food on the mat where his dish is (which takes some repetition) gets a small x-pen plopped down around him and his dish.
They eat fast. I just pick it up when he's done.

What's an "x-pen"?
You need to sit back in your garden, sip a whiskey, smoke a cigar and THINK about your dog training. |

Also, I was wondering if it's better to feed once or twice a day?

It's a collapsible (or foldable) exercise pen. The ones for smaller dogs are the ones I meant in this case; I have one for inside the house as a temporary "stay in that spot" thing for a dog who doesn't yet know "place" or who, as we were discussing, still drags pieces of food off to a more comfortable and private munching location on a carpet.

IMO, twice.
Deep-chested bloat-vulnerable dogs, twice. Small dogs, twice. Others, up to you.
That's just my own take. I read up before making that decision, though.
If I had a non-bloat-vulnerable larger dog, I might rethink it, since dogs on their own in the wild would gorge and fast and probably not set their clocks for breakfast and dinner service.

She rinsed it off and put it back in his bowl. A few minutes latter he had it on the living room carpet and just started crunching away!
aha! she rinsed it off!
i strongly suspect the dog was objecting to the brine they soak the chickens in. if he hesitates again, try rinsing the meat really well and see if it makes it more palatable to him.
also, why don't you people feed your dogs outside? i would never let my dog chomp down on RMBs in the house. yeech! i have no interest in cleaning up after that. ben gets fed outside even when it is 25 below zero out and he is just fine with it.

Oh, right, I forgot that! Excellent point! (Or even try a different source, since that brine is a big sodium thing.)

I was waiting for that one.
The lucky folks who can feed outside and not worry about open gates, etc., have my envy.
I have a neighbor who feeds the dogs on part of her porch, which is perfect. She even has a gate setup so the whole porch isn't food-anointed (although I wouldn't care that much about the porch).
But people whose dogs might not be safe alone outside might not want to spend their dogs' mealtimes outdoors with them in snow, rain, and sleet. And there are lots of dog owners with more than one whose feeding time is policed so each dog gets only his own food and there are no food wars or just plain thievery.
It would be nice, though!

I didn't rinse off the wing I gave him this morning and he chompped it up just like last night.
I fed him his kibble outside on the patio once and it became infested with ants within minutes! Maybe the ants won't care so much for the raw stuff though. I'll either feed him in his kennel or watch him to make sure he stays on the kitchen floor with his raw bone.

Just wanted to thank everyone for their help with starting my dog out on raw. My dog has been loving his meals. Now it's just a matter of getting into the groove of things, finding the best deals on different kinds of meat and balancing everything the right way.
I've been using Ed's 7 day sample menu as a rough guide for what and how much I should feed my dog. Ed's menu is for a 90 lb male and my dog is 45 lbs, so it was simple enough to just cut all his measurments in half.
Does anyone know where I could find any other menu ideas or samples?
