That is a great idea, Judy. Great idea. I do have just one question, though. Were you afraid your dog might bite the little girls or do you just not like people petting your dog? No offense or anything, I was just curious.
But seriously, that is a great idea.
Are we allowing anonymous users now?
Amber, that post was Katie Cleveland. The one that kept saying it's OK to torture, as long as you don't like the animal. I don't know why her name now comes up as anonymous. She said she was quitting the board. Maybe she didn't really leave?

I feel for Judy's situation with her neighbors kids.
I live on 3 acres next to a park, and have had several bad experiences with kids throwing things over the privacy fence.
I've covered all my kennels with chain link and now keep my dogs in their kennel runs instead of running free when I'm not there. I also walk the park routinely to remove rocks, sticks, or anything else laying around to prevent a bad situation. This seemed to work well for me, since I haven't had any problems since.
The saddest part is that before I took these measures, someone threw a brick over the fence and fractured my rottie's skull. That was back in 1997, and she recovered well with the exception of a slightly misshapen recess above her right eye. I live in a small decent community where you wouldn't think this would happen. I was distraught over it.

I'm glad my neighbours aren't lawyers! My little terrier barks every time she sees them. I apologized once, and got a 20 minute response about how every dog has a different personality and Bella "just likes to let people know she's there"...god I like my neighbour, even if she does talk a lot.

James, what happened to your dog is awful. I'm glad to hear she recovered. Mean people suck. (my favorite bumper sticker)

james, i caught the owner of the building next door to me (he's the landlord), throwing a rock at my dog. fortunately, he missed, and it was the sound of the rock hitting the house that alerted me.
i called an officer, told him how to reach the landlord, and asked him to please explain to the man that this is not behavior that can be tolerated. i haven't had a problem with him since, but it is one of many reasons my dog is never outside when i'm not home.

We planted bamboo willow (great coverage, but invasive) to block neighbor's view from across the street into our property. They are the kind that stand in their yard, watch what you are doing and want to know what it going on at all times. Kind of creepy. We are about 75% covered right now - they were not happy.:-)

We have a 6 foot brick wall around the backyard (everyone in this neighborhood does) and my pup likes to run and patrol along the wall barking at night when he first goes out to potty. This is something he started doing on his own and it's fine with me. I let him do it for a few seconds cause want people to know there's a dog there. There have been many many incidents in our neighborhood, every house I know of has been either broken into, had their car or tires stolen, etc, me included - breaking into my car (can't even park in my own driveway overnight), peeping tom at my window, guys casing the neighborhood driving real slow and going round and round the block, your basic lowlife scum.
If anyone ever complains about my dog barking, I'll just say "when you can make your out of control kids stop screaming for hours on end and throwing trash in my yard, and when you can stop playing your house or car stereo so loud that it reverberates in my house and I can't hear myself think, then I'll stop my dog from barking. Until then, deal with it.

Yuko, I feel the same way about your post:
"Maybe I should just let my dog do the talking... my words are often ignored, but so far no one has challenged his displays of aggression"
Brenna is very good with people, but hasn't figured out yet whether she likes other dogs...but that doesn't stop other people from coming right up on us and letting their dogs, who aren't leashed, have access to her. I have to grab her, pick her up, or walk away while asking/screaming for them to control their dog.
Another 6 or 7 months Brenna will show them better than I can tell them, if they won't listen.
David, you have to talk to a lawyer. All of our advice might be good and practical, but it won't matter in court if it ends up there.
Bark collars won't teach your dog not to bark, more than likely...it'll teach them not to bark when they have the collar on As someone pointed out earlier, that's why they make the dummy collars...
I also think the shrub idea is worthy of consideration. I think Ed has used this in his own kennels and dog runs to keep dogs from being stimulated visually by another dog, etc...
Ed, if you're monitoring this thread, what is the big bushy plants you use in the big yards in your overhead picture of your farm? They seem to border every dog run and look very bushy/leafy...

I've read this post and figured I'd chime in! In regards to your personal property- it is your personal property. But if your personal property is causing perceived harm or damage to someone else body or property, you can be held liable. This can include you fixing or removing the damaging property or having it removed for you if you fail to do so in a reasonable and timely manner.
Also, to play devil's advocate, I don't believe I read how long this problem has been going on. Also, we don't know if the neighbor has ever spoken with David or vice versa about the problem in the past. For someone to throw down the gauntlet like that and threated to legally have his dog's removed leads me to believe that there is more to this story.
