When I lived in Costa Rica for a while, I saw a 12 yr old boy throw up a tapeworm. Trust me, you DO NOT WANT that thing inside you. I didn't want to post that, but you all leave me no choice
Oh man.... There's something way grosser about barfing up a worm then having one appear out the other end.
But just to take this one step further, that terrible movie remake of The Fly has Gina Davis giving birth to a worm! Nothing tops that.
Maybe you should give Lee S a head's up here, Sandy. Let him know what else he's in for moving to CR

LOL Sandy that's really gross, thanks for sharing
Well obviously if anyone (or any dog) has such a heavy parasitic load that you can actually see them throwing up or pooping worms, then it's high time to do something about it.
I'm just saying, if you're in great health and have lots of energy, there's no need to worry about what you may or may not have picked up from petting your dog or maybe even from having come into contact with dirt once in a while
Trust me, a healthy human/dog's immune system is more than equipped to quash all those creepy wormies. We have armies of immune cells that are specialized in dealing with intestinal parasites.
Just try not to think about it, it'll drive you crazy cause it's gross yet worms and parasites are EVERYWHERE!
As for me, I have no intention of giving up raw fish any time soon (sushi-addict, lol). So there's a good chance I've ingested worm eggs from eating lots of raw fish my whole life...
Who cares?? Not me! I feel great
Since I have yet to find any evidence of worms in myself, I'm just going to assume that my immune system destroyed whatever I may have eaten. Hee hee, this thread is cracking me up...

I've eaten raw whale..Don't know what kinds of things they would carry. ( I'm Alaska Native. Don't send PETA here. They're already telling us to quit eating salmon. e____e )
I'm pretty sure alot of my family further up north eat plenty of raw stuff ( I know walrus can be a favorite.. ). never heard of too many problems with that, but, considering how cold it is, can worms and many germs live there?
I never was good with science. Haha.
I know some people have pulled out very very very large tapeworms from the rear end of a dead moose. That had to be a lovely sight.
But I agree with Yuko about the whole germ-a-phobe stuff. we've already got a bunch of gross stuff inside us, some are bad, but some do us good, too. And it's better to build up an immunity to things rather than avoiding them at all costs.
'cause remember. Not everyone washes their hands.

Amanda, absolutely.
Trust me, if I had to pull any worm out of my dog's butt, I'd be the first to grab a deworming pill and push it down their throat.
I guess my logic is to not worry about something that isn't hurting you or causing you problems. Especially something as easy to get rid of as a humble roundworm
Oh, I will absolutely reiterate the advice to avoid eating dog poop though. Your immune system can handle only so much. If you live in absolutely horrific sanitary conditions, don't count on staying healthy for very long
There's certainly a balance between being so germaphobic that you damage your body's ability to fight off pathogens versus taking unnecessary risks by forgoing the simple rules of sanitation (as in, for god's sakes wash your hands after going to the bathroom!! or fully cook any dog poop that you're considering ingesting - this one should be said to vets who freak out about raw feeding saying how germy your dog's poop is going to be )

Ok, now I'm freaked. Freaked cause people are saying not to be freaked if a human has worms wiggling around inside them. Come on guys, are you serious?
When I lived in Costa Rica for a while, I saw a 12 yr old boy throw up a tapeworm. Trust me, you DO NOT WANT that thing inside you. I didn't want to post that, but you all leave me no choice
I'm not afraid of germs and bacteria, but the thought of worms inside me creeps me out BIG time.
P.S. Carol, pm me that chicken and asparagus alfredo recipe.

blegh. this is why i'd avoided this thread.
(bad thing to admit....apparently we had a dog when i was really little, that my parents rehomed. partially b/c the dog had worms and i had a stubborn and sneaky love for eating the sand in the sandbox.)
....also, this reminds me that luc came w/giardia, hookworm, and tapeworm, and b/c we were on vacation at the time, i forgot to bring in his follow-up fecal sample to make sure he was worm-free. i've never seen worms in his stool.
Teagan!

aaaaaaaaaaggggggggggh.
I've had enough.
Self-medication is the only way now. Jim Beam is natural, organic, and the human gi tract is designed to handle it. Goes back to ancient history, it was part of our natural diet. Old Jimmy will take care of any foreign critters think'n about using my body in their livin.
Ummmmmmm, talk to ya'll again in about 72 hours.

My grandfather fed his dogs Copenhagen or Redman to get rid of worms.

As in tobacco, or the other demon of sin, alcohol?
Both seem to be poison to most things.
One for the road please.

A vet told me that injested tobacco paralizes the worms so that they can be passed out of the body.
I heard of it being used as an old time horse wormer.
