this IS a neat thread! well, after working for one of the 2 biggest meat-packers for 13 years scheduling cattle to the plant, i left and now sell health insurance thru a non-profit association for self-employed ppl. i like it cause i get to meet some really neat ppl, help them out, and advocate/refer those i can't write insurance for.
and i work from home, so get to spend more time w/dogs & kids & garden. someday i'll make enough money to buy another pup, but my freako rescue dogs are fine for now.
i would like to thank everyone in the EMT business especially this week: after having 2 kids roll cars within one year--you guys are the BEST!!! (i hate gravel roads and young drivers, now, BTW--but can't get away from 'em here). both kids were LUCKY (the latest wasn't wearing her seat-belt and actually walked 1/4 mi to the nearest house), lived, w/no serious damage. my boy was in his 3x-rolled car for an hour b/f a farmer happened to drive by and notice him--they cut the car up to get him out...anyway--THANKS TO ALL FIRST RESPONDERS!! i couldn't do your job.
Im a Ballet teacher, and last year for my sabatical, I actually did more Dog related study than dance related study, but through learning to train Kane I actually think Im giong to be a better teacher this year. Being a pack leader is applicable in many situations...I often remind my children of that when Im being calm assertive lol.
When I was in high school, I wanted very much to become an ASL interpreter. I enjoyed ASL and the Deaf Community quite a bit.
Somehow I got sidetracked and ended up in the Army. Still puzzled as to how that happened.
How did you learn about ASL and the Deaf Community? Just curious. Whenever you are retired from the military, you can always go back learning how to sign again.
"It's better to be an optimist who is sometimes wrong than a pessimist who is always right"
When I was in Jr High, I was in the hospital once. There was a kid there, who was deaf. And NO interpreters. He had NO way to communicate with the docs.
That just seemed so fundamentally wrong.
When I got into high school, I decided to take ASL as my "foreign" language.
My teacher, Sabra Hearty, was the hearing daughter of two deaf parents. She was uniquely equipped to help us not only learn ASL, but about the Deaf Community.
My high school had a very large (by average standards) deaf population. In my Junior year, I was a very active member in our chapter of Junior NAD.
We used to be assigned to intepret at school assemblies.
It's something I really enjoyed, and I'd like to do it again someday.
I currently work on a farm doing prep for a couple major farmers markets and sometimes help sell at the markets. my "hobby job" is my flock of sheep. I do handspinning and then knit hats, socks, scarves, etc to sell.
Before that I was a nanny for a few years - loved the kids and still keep in touch with them, but I was ready for a break for a little while.

Well I'm a dog groomer in training, go to school, do the coolest aunt in the world thing, I also work at a big box pet store. It has it's moments of wishing I was anywhere else but for the most part I get to help people which is nice.
I am an Athletic Trainer for Campbells Orthopedic Clinic and provide the medical coverage for a local high schools athletic programs during the school year and work in Physical Therapy doing rehab with patients during the Summer.I like both types of work but getting to work with the kids is the best! The school year gives me the time off in the mornings to train my dog working. I feel very blessed to have a job I love every day.
