I think you should consider rehoming the Pitt as well. For whatever reason, I don't think you get it, and I am concerned for your baby. Leaving them alone together when they were eating was careless (being kind). Not doing something when the fight errupted was, IMO, criminal.
I understand not putting yourself in between them but if your first instinct was to hide; I think there is something missing in your bond with both dogs. That combined with your repeated poor judgement leaves me to believe your child's safety is at risk from any dog you own.
And I agree with Sheila... I don't think I've EVER, even from the weakest of owners, heard of anyone fleeing their own home in fear to let their OWN dogs go at each other. This is simply disgraceful and I feel so incredibly awful for your poor pit mix. You've let BOTH dogs down and I agree with giving them both to more experienced homes. Even if your pit was not the aggressor here, and even if it never steps out of line in the future, no dog deserves to live with an owner who has shown such blatant incompetence and distrust.

Un-frigging-believable.
I hope you understand what you've done and accomplished over the years Rebecca.
This, after telling us how much you've realized you'd failed the dog! You failed him yet again!
Never, ever never get another dog!!!!!!

I agree with Randy!

If I can add onto what Sheila was saying, you still own a powerful dog (the pit is still alive and in your care, right?). AND YOU do not have ANY BUSINESS owning a powerful dog. NONE.
Not to mention that the however good tempered the pit was before the attack, I'd say it's now at pretty high-risk for fear/dog aggression, and I think you've proven you can't handle a dog with behavioural problems, PARTICULARLY aggression issues.

I don't mean this rudely but you shouldn't own ANY dog. I can't think of anything else to say that doesn't have swearing in it. #$$@^@#$%@$%@#!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I could not say it any better. Re-home both dogs. The poor Pit may have a chance of retaining some kind of healthy outlook about other dogs with a different owner, after having his pack leader/protector leave him alone with another dog, and a problem dog besides, while they had food and then run away and wait outdoors while he is attacked -- but he has no chance with you.
And there is NO WAY that there should be a child in the same house with you and a dog.
From the tone of your post (I quote: "disappointing"!?!?), I don't even think that you even get how miserably you have failed both dogs in your care. Please re-home them.

I don't think this is for real!! Surely this is someone that is just trying to get a rise out of everyone.
It's a long way to go to do that, but I actually hope that you're right. I don't want to think that standing around outdoors for 15 minutes doing nothing but waiting while your own two dogs try to kill each other is real.
unfortunately, I receive emails multiple times a day with situations very similar to this. I don't believe it's a prank.
Just yesterday I got an email from a lady who has 3 dogs who fight with each other and she told me flat out not to give her any "common sense" advice like keep the dogs separated or don't give them bones to fight over. I think she wanted a magic wand waved over the dogs! Sadly, many people shouldn't own one dog, let alone multiples.
I'm going to close this thread and if Ed wants it reopened he can do so.
