The risk of GDV was increased 4.2-fold (or 320%) in dogs that consumed dry foods containing citric acid that were also moistened prior to feeding by owners.
So basically don't pre-soak the food if it contains citric acid? Does this include asorbic acid too?

However, I dampen Lucy's kibble (limited ingredient Natural balance) and don't have a problem. It is as hard as a rock! My guess is if no grains in it, it can't "soak".
And, the study doesn't make clear whether its the citric acid or whether its the moistening of the food.
Look! I DO fit in the bag. |

Alyssa, soooooo glad to hear you guys are OK.
And, thanks for the update and the great advice.
Jennifer, I am going to start right nor freezing baited water. And I will start with her next meal pouring water on (she's raw fed, too).
I keep fresh water in her bowl, in a container beside the door, one outside plus the kiddie (doggie) pool daily.
How do you know if your dog is drinking enough?
Is there a was to estimate?

We've begun measuring how much water we're offering. We now have graduated cups designated for that purpose.
We've started keeping a journal of how much water is added to meals, how many cups go into the water bowls, and how often.

We're in the middle of a heat wave here at the moment, this is the reminder I need to keep my dogs safe - I will be watching their water intake carefully.
Glad she's ok Alyssa and hope all the tests go well.

How much SHOULD a dog be drinking? Is there a measurable amount? (Like a percent of body weight, etc)
I've noticed that since I started feeding raw, my dog hardly touches the water bowl, and it makes what happened with Danke scare the hell out of me that much more.
I have visions of being alone out in the field (which is 99% of the time) with a collapsing dog that I can't carry...
To make it worse, he wants no part of water being poured over his food. What are some creative ways to bait the water that even a picky dog can't resist?

I vote Ice-Pups from THK.
I think it's individual.
Check your dogs gums before, during and after activity.

I've had success with chicken or beef broth added to water, then when they are used to the idea, decreasing gradually until it is all water. I know that plain water is better, but when they won't drink at all, it's better than nothing.
Just make sure it is NOT an over-processed broth. I have started to save stuff like that (juices etc) when I am cooking, and freeze a supply of them for later use.
I usually freeze an ice cube tray with various "nasty" stuff (salmon oil, bacon grease, broth, some random odds and ends like organ meat, etc) and mix it with a LOT of water (the other stuff is only there to add a little flavor), freeze, and give them out when working/hot or as an extra treat.
When a flower doesn't bloom, you fix the environment in which it grows, not the flower. |

I vote Ice-Pups from THK. ...
So do I! Big time!

But any "juicy" meat (bloody) works, too.
Ice Pup is a very good backup to have on hand always, to give fluid as well as nutrition to a sick dog ... and you can use it in tiny amounts to bait the water all the time besides!
I now keep this product on hand as religiously as canned plain pumpkin. Thicker, it's a soup. Thinner, it's fluid with flavor. (It smells great.)
