I haven't read this whole thread so someone may have mentioned this already. An air horn works well as a deterrent and is legal. I also occasionally shoot a cap gun, but that only scares away some dogs.
I am not sure the walking stick would stop a big dog from attacking. I had a GSD about 10 years ago. She was very dog aggressive. I had a screened in porch at the time. She saw a neighbors dog and jumped thru the screen and went after his dog. Neighbor whacked her with a shovel, it didn't even phase her!
Lisa,
I took a self-defense seminar that taught stick fighting several years ago.
Several women in the course who were over the age of 55 were able to smash cow femurs with one blow. What do you think a blow like that would do to a canine?
Believe me, a walking stick can stop a large dog attack cold, but........*you* have to get a little training to have it work best.
Self-defense is just like dog training, a little knowledge and practice goes a long way.
I have never heard of stick fighting. That walking stick on the other thread was pretty cool.
Where does someone get stick fighting training? Self defense class? I have never seen any self defense classes around in this area, however I haven't really pursued it either.
There is a Stick Fighting Association in Texas, Houston area. Many Martial Arts Studios run classes, they even sell DVDs with instruction...Self defense classes are always a plus, a stick is an added bonus, what Will posted is a big bonus!
A stick is a good weapon.
Just like a gun though, or any other weapon for that matter, it is only as effective as ones inner will to use it.
...and ability to use it effectively under duress, as when some unsupervised beast, two legs or four, threatens you or yours.
For me in my situation, the stick works best, although I support all gun ownership and use. Maybe it's the old baseball player in me, I dunno. Jest feels natural...
A dog has alot of friends because he wags his tail instead of his mouth.

I actually use my drumming ability for that very purpose. I'm able to swing a stick hard, fast, and accurately with minimal effort. Point being, sometimes known skills can be translated into something else with a little focus and effort.
