already said have lived without a dog for 20+ years so am sure i can do it again if that makes the most sense, although you would think from the level of response that i have opted for lion taming or wrestling tiger sharks bare-handed in open water, relax a bit people, i aint scared of none of it. haven't been to schutzhund trial personally but have seen tapes of 50 year old women pulling higher titles, (no offence to 50 yo women) but hell i can do that.
Well trained dogs look impressive. Most dogs that you'll see on tape are well trained. What that tape doesn't show you are the hundreds of hours of training, the thousands of hours the handler has spent getting to that level, the mistakes there were made, the times training didn't go as planned. This happens with all dogs and all training venues. Saying that is like saying "It's not that hard to take up champion level figure skating - after all teenagers do it all the time"

That sums it up pretty good Mara. Looking at the end result with no idea how to get there.

Having fun based on experience, starting with an appropriate dog, and I would imagine, accepting sound advice along the way.
When I first read this post, I started typing something along the lines of a polite "have you lost your ever lovin' mind" but, not having the experience anywhere near the majority of folks on this forum, deleted and said something nice and polite since Peter hadn't been responded to in a while.
I have to admit, from the moment I read the post, my first thougth was "this individual is not going to take the advice he is going to receive". Many of you probably had the same thought.
I find it so interesting, and I mean that sincerely, not flippantly, that some folks post a serious question about a serious situation, but when they do not get the feedback they "wanted" to hear - they tune you out and are gone.
Occassionally, we have folks who actually listen to, accept and at least TRY the advice they are given, and it is those folks who stay on line, become better trainers, or like me, at least are good for a chuckle now and then. I could have bailed when I realized I had a german working line dog and that this was not exactly "embraced" on this forum - but as humbling as it was to realize I blew my research, that knowledge made me realize I could learn a heck of a lot here for my NEXT dog. I didn't hear what I WANTED to hear, but I heard what I needed to hear.
Too long already, I'll stop. New folks need to stick around longer, leave the ego at the door and keep an open mind. There is so much to learn here. Although we never have any fun. THAT is prohibited and not tolerated. Beware the wanket.

Yep, Mara, you hit the nail on the head. Most people never see & don't have a clue about the time put in to get those results.
I have to wonder why people want to even have dogs that really don't have the time or the inclination to do any training.
ETA.... we say what we do about training, because people need to have a realistic idea of what it takes to get the end result. Many newbes, I think, are really shocked to find that it takes the time it does. Too many Ceasar Milan shows that make people believe that everything is a breeze or a quick fix. If only it were so.

It's the trip...not the destination that makes the road traveled worthwhile.
It's not the beginning or end that counts so much, everything in between is what's called life.
Stop and smell the roses......yada yada yada.
Don't know how many ways it can be said.
Slow down Peter, enjoy your present dog. Think and do some research for your next one/second one. There's no rush.

Yeah
I've had a hard couple of days and a couple more to come this week.
I feel a bit punky.
No doubt I'm a little squishy,

Lauren hi, i never intend to get into a situation of "handler aggresion" or any of the things suggested here. i was just awkwardly responding to others comments and it came out dumb sounding. in fact this thread has ended up non-informational so i'm off it.
cheers
There are people who do that intentionally?
Damn, and I thought *I* was a masochist.
