I'm not answering for Willie, Lenka, but I do it slightly different. I fill my mouth with hotdog pieces and make an obvious movement feeding them from there and also spitting them when they have the idea of where they are.
And I trained it differently as well. I sat on the floor when mine was a pup, and waited until she looked at my face at random. I marked and rewarded. And did it over and over. So, in her case, I did no luring at all. Just waited for the moment. Once she associated that looking at my eyes/face got her a reward, I would say 'Watch Me!' and mark and reward when she looked in my eyes.
I think the best thing in life I ever have done is to join this forum. If you go to five different mechanics you are apt to find one that will fix your car. However: it is not like that with dog trainers and I don't quite understand why. After so many years in the dark I feel like I can finally take care of my dogs the way they need.... thank so much Lynne!
I'd say what Steve or Lynne said for teaching the focus.
There are different ways but those two are the most common.
Get that marker training vid..you will love it!!!
I'm glad you are happy to be here...we are happy to help!!!!!
I like it here too!!!!
