The only chow that I've ever really known was plain 'ole mean. Dirty mean.
She would act as sweet as she could to lure you close enough to bite. I'm talking butt wiggling and totally submissive posture. When you reached down she'd try her damndest to getcha'.
Then she would cut the submissive act and go right back to normal.
You just had to see it. There wasn't anything else going on other than her using dirty puppy tactics to bite you.

My experience with Chows is based solely on being the person with the needle. No dog likes that person, the vet office brings out the worst in a dog --- or, alternatively, it can bring out the absolute best, for example a dog really, really hurt who seems to comprehend that you are in fact trying your very best to help them.

Why do we want to talk about Akitas now?
This thread is about Chow Chows and their temperament.
Oops. Got distracted. Ever happen to you? Does to me sometimes. Didn't mean to set you off again.
Want to make a new Akita thread?
New topic ...
maya culpa. Akita was lumped in several responses in this thread. Just responding to those...
And about those Chow Chows...

The first reference to akitas and other japanese reference breeds was in the 2nd reply to the OP. Several other posters considered the chow in the context of other japanese or asian breeds and in doing so commented on the similarities and differences. I note several previous entirely acceptable references in this threat to shiba inu, tosa, shar pei, akita.
So why raise the issue now.
no need for a new thread in my opinion, simply the normal exploration of a subject examining a new facet.
Also Mr. Abel has been nothing but pleasant and respectful in his posts, including those to Mr. Allen.

Just because others have mentioned some other breeds within context does not make this thread about about Akitas, Shar Peis, Pitbulls or any other four legged creature that happens to be called a canine Andrew.
Respectful not withstanding.

Comparing and contrasting is an often-used technique in discussion. Metaphors and analogies can be likewise illuminating. Sometimes, new insights are gained if a person can step away from the literal for a moment.

Yeah, a couple of times the thread mentioned other breeds ... you're right. Of course that happens as a thread goes along its way.
A post basically saying "Now let's talk about Akitas" really, IMHO, needs its own new thread.
Nothing to do with the lovely Mr. Abel or the equally lovely Mr. Allen. Both are invaluable to this board.

That is a scary picture! That shows a lot of conscious forethought IMO.

One of the only times I have been genuinely scared when walking my dog was when a chow crarged a gate at us *not* barking.
There are lots of breeds I have a hard time reading. Sometimes bully breeds are diffcult, they just always look so stiff. If you aren't close enough to see what their eyes and ears are doing it can be tricky.

I knew her for years and am pretty sure she never even killed a mouse.
Never bit anyone......unless they fell for her act. It was good, too. She would come up to you with what little tail she had wagging. Come right up to you so close that her chest was touching your legs and she had her eyes pointing straight up to yours. Just don't pet her.
The only people that could pet her were her owners, my friend and his parents. Another friend later moved into this house to stay in the school district. He earned her respect and was allowed to pet her after feeding her everyday for about a year.
