I know this topic was started a while back, but I'm a new member and just now getting a chance to jump in here. Next to dogs, one of the biggest passions in my life is reading. On its way to me right now is Ken Follet's brand-new book, "The Fall of Giants." I can't wait to get started on it. He is one of my very favorite authors. His "Pillars of the Earth" still ranks as one of the very best. I don't think he's ever written a bad book.
I also love Dean Koontz and I'm in the process of re-reading some of his older ones. As others have mentioned, he often includes dogs in his stories, sometimes as main characters. My favorite Koontz book of all time has got to be "Odd Thomas." No dogs but a wonderfully quirky story. Also loved "Life Expectancy" and "By The Light Of The Moon."
I also enjoy Jeffrey Archer. "Kane and Abel" and "As the Crow Flies" are right up there on my all-time favorite list. And I unashamedly admit that I am a big fan of the Jean Auel "Earth's Children" series that started with "The Clan of the Cave Bear." Have you heard the final book in the series is coming out next March? Wooo-hooo!!! Can't wait.
I will also admit that I love post-apocalyptic fiction, and some of my favorites of that genre are "The Last Ship," "A Gift Upon The Shore," and "Down To A Sunless Sea," among others.
I won't even get started on non-fiction or this post will go on forever. I just love reading and I'm so glad to get to talk to others who share my feelings.

I just got done reading the Stieg Larsson Millenium trilogy and it was fantastic! Very sad that the author died shortly after delivering the manuscripts as I would have loved to read more about Lisbeth Salander and the other characters in the trilogy :-(

I agree, so very sad that he only got the first three published. From what I understand there may be a couple more that were finished to some degree and may be publishable in the future.
I am on book 6 of the outlander series now, and enjoying it very much, you really care about the main characters and as soon as one is finished I feel the need to get the next right away. I will be sad to finish the series!
Cheri, I love the books by Jean Auel, my grandmother originally gave me the second or third in the series and I was a bit surprised at the (ahem) adultness of it, considering where it came from LOL. But enjoyed it so much I read more.
Next up for me is the Sword of the Lady by S.M stirling. I have been slogging through that series as it comes out for a few years now.
Has anyone else read the Kushiel Series by jaqueline Carey? They are most definately for adults, but beautifully written darker historical fantasy and her world building is impressive and totally believable!
My son and I are reading the Owls of Ga-hoole books together as well, he seems to be enjoying them.

I'm waaaaay late, but I can't help myself.
My favorite book of all time is Edgewater Angels by Sandro Meallet. Probably because a good portion of my family grew up in San Pedro, CA and my dad has lived there almost his entire life.
I really love The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime, by Mark Haddon. The Perks of Being a Wallflower, by Stephen Chbosky. Requiem for a Dream and Last Exit to Brooklyn were excellent, if you like that kind of stuff, both by Hubert Selby Jr. The cool thing about them is that there is no punctuation, for the most part. It actually helps if you've seen the movie first for Requiem. I also like The Rules of Attraction by Bret Easton Ellis but I refuse to see the movie because I read American Psycho, which I also thought was fantastic, and they turned it into the absolute worst movie ever.
Of course The Golden Compass is great too. I love Of Mice and Men. Where the Red Fern Grows. Go Ask Alice. I'm pretty sure I could go on forever....
But the best book ever? Andrew Zuckerman's Creature. Here's a photo of my computer desktop, which is a photo from the book. Garrett got me the book for Christmas a few years ago and I was so excited!

I also think that American Psycho is one of the worst movies ever. Totally turned me off to Christian Bale too I just can't get over that movie when watching him.

True story. It was terrible. Absolutely terrible. It makes me mad just thinking about it! I accepted him as Batman, but I have to admit that Batman reminds me of Bateman and it's annoying.

I'm glad I found this thread! I'm actually going back to school in January to finish my English degree.
Right now I'm reading an old Thomas Jefferson biography. However, I'm a little disappointed because it's not very objective. It's still a good read.
My favorite author is Wendell Berry. If you're an animal and nature lover then you will appreciate his writings. Jayber Crow is one of my favorites. If you can appreciate a story about rural life, love, and the natural world then you'll enjoy Jayber Crow. Berry's non-fiction and poetry are superb as well.

Well I devoured another book in the Outlander series and decided to take a break because I am so in love with the characters and will be sad when I finish the series.
My husband has informed me that I am officially a giant nerd because of it LOL
My Nook will be here in two weeks. I am sooooo excited and have been reading up on all the ins and outs of it. The ability to carry around hundreds of books in my purse all at once makes me giddy!
Speaking of Nooks....The first book in the outlander series is free in the E-book format at both Barnes and Noble and Sony.
