When these kids eyes are locked on my dog and they stare he seems to take exception to that. I guess its a challenge to him. he doesnt care for that either.
Alec,
I would train him to look at you when you walk by children or for that matter anything else you think may set him off. I find this is useful when approached by other dogs even off leash and uncontrolled..... generally it takes two to tango and if your dog is watching you and you keep moving without focusing on the other dog; the situation usually diffuses itself.
As far as being at the door and barking when the mailman comes; I don't think that is a good idea because he is reinforced everytime the mailman leaves, and you know what happens when a behavior is reinforced. It happens more often and he may very well begin to generalize it to other areas of his life.
You could train him to go to his crate and eventually have the arrival of the mailman become the trigger to go to his crate.
In general I have accepted that I can not control other people and their pets and realize situations will occur. I can however control myself, my dog's environment and hopefully my dog's response and that is what I practice and train for. Knowing I can direct his attention to me and keep moving to avoid him fixating on the offending being be it human or animal has removed the stress from our outings.
Surely you jest! Was not the wafghan/wanket woven to delight?
I do try. Eat right and stay active to keep my manscape nice. Mow shirtless to work on the tan and give the rest of the neighborhood something to live for or work towards.

And it's working....... but how'd you get that black eye in your signature photo?
