I also read somewhere that if we make a big deal of the raw food they will "read" this and make a bigger deal of it than normal??

.... should Kaiser "guard" his chicken? I want to be able to take anything away from him in case he chokes or something, but I don't want to appear as a bully either?
He is only 14 weeks and if this is dominance I want to end it now, right?
Thoughts??
Guarding it how, and why? If you put down his food and leave him with it, who is he guarding it from? If you have little kids who might mess with it, you can feed him in his crate.
MHO: Leave him alone with the food you gave him. And don't allow other dogs near him (and vice versa) while he eats.
But that's a different topic. You may want to start a new thread, but it has been covered here many times, so you might want to do a search first.

Eh. I can't picture my dogs getting all excited over a bag of Purina, no matter what kind of a big deal I tried to make out of it.

Connie-
Your senior dog that came to you with a kibble diet- sounds like he was fortunate to have found you!!
Did he have a history of any problems that cleared up with a raw diet?
I had to laugh at the dog that vibrates when the dishes come out!! I can just SEE that!!
I just feed Kaiser on the front lawn and then spray it down with a fresh lemon juice/vinegar mix in a spray bottle, and then hose it off- is this safe?
I had a vet tell me she wouldn't feed raw because WE could get salmonella from HIM?? Did she mean from the raw meat WHERE he ate it, or did she mean from his poop??
I had never heard of this so I was thrown off a little.

I was talking about getting excited over raw meat, not kibble. Yeah I cannot see any dog, knowing what is in those bags, getting excited over Purina!

I am so happy he is feeling better, and he seems calmer too, now that his tummy is under control- I would be calmer too!!
Speaking of no other dog comes near your dog while he is eating his RMB's, should Kaiser "guard" his chicken? I want to be able to take anything away from him in case he chokes or something, but I don't want to appear as a bully either?

Hey Melissa, I was kinda skimming and just caught a couple things I wanted to point out. I fall into the give him his food and leave him alone camp too. If he's choking on something that bad, He's not going to be looking for your help and your going to have to look like a bully getting it, if you even can.
The other thing, I've had trouble with two of my dogs and leg quarters. They both will gulp down a mostly intact leg bone. One of them learned to crunch it up, but the other one, I quit feeding them. Just be aware of your dog, and how he handles the different pieces.

Don't french-kiss the dog, and pick up the dog poop (and never eat it).
Maintain the same sanitary standards when preparing raw meat for dogs as you do when handling raw meat for eventual family consumption. It's the same raw meat!
Dogs lick their butts (and other dogs' butts) and they snack from litter boxes. So you probably don't want to make out with any of them ... and as far as poop goes, I agree: pick it up and throw it away. No matter what they eat, it's bacteria-laden.
As Michael commented once, in a similar thread, he "can't understand why it seems to be a problem to keep dog poop out of our mouths."

I have the same issue with one of mine.
I just don't do the leg quarters now. The butcher gives me the front end as is and the other end coarsely ground (and I buy backs too). But of course many many dogs do just fine with them. I'm with Steve: be aware of your own dog.
