Hi CJ, I am about 30 minutes outside of Nelson... so basically, Nelson. I personally don't hunt, but can think of one or two people I work with that may have hunting connections. That is a good idea.
He is settling in well otherwise, I'm just in the process of posting a video on youtube, I'll put the link in the vids section.

I was thinkng Probios & or Prozyme. Someone mentioned feeding Nupro in a thread recently. I have not used Nupro, so I don't know anything about it, only that I had heard it mentioned over the last few years.
bWhatever you decide, in the future, if you decide to feed raw,I would give the one with out alot of other ingreedents that you don't really need. Sometimes less is more.
I still feed probiotics daily to my dogs & they have been fed raw all their lives, from weening. It is one of the extras that I add.

Well, I'm not sure what I'm going to do. This morning's poop was same as usual, then he wouldn't go mid morning, and when he did go around noon, it was pretty well formed, but very small. Then just now (about 2:30pm my time) he had a pudding explosion. Plus, he is starving (well, acting starving). If it weren't for the fact that he does have some solid stools, I would think it was worms, or some other health related thing. I've been giving a little bit of pumpkin, which he loves, but I don't know if it is making any difference really.
I know that Orijen is a super rich food, but my dogs have always done well in the past, and as previously pointed out, it might not be best to change his food now - as he doesn't seem uncomfortable at all (not straining, attempting multiple poops, etc.). I'm wondering if a bit of plain yogurt would make the situation better or worse...
I think probiotics are a great thing, I take them myself.

If you want to try the probiotics...It won't hurt him & may help a bit. I would just grind up one of yours...as long as it ONLY is probiotics..not other vitamins etc in it. Just pour it over his next meal...or just take the pill & open his mouth & push it down his throat & close his mouth for a second & let him swallow. That way you are not giving him any extras. Don't give into the more food.
I would still do a fecal on him. Just in case, if you haven't already.
Hang in there.

I think it would be best to just make him take the pill, I could cover follow it with a lick of pumpkin as a chaser, and he'd be fine.
This is what I take New Roots Acidophilus Ultra, the exact ingredients are listed at the very bottom of the page. No extra vitamins, enteric coated, it's a very good brand.

Phaedra, PM Connie with this. I'm not sure about the enteric coating. She knows more about that. I am thinking that the coating may not be good in dogs. Not sure.
Also if you can pick one up that has multiple probiotics that would be even better.

Thanks, I did pm her, and asked her to respond in here, for everyone's benefit. I believe these capsules, although primarily acidophilus, also have other probiotics. This is what's listed:
"Each PH5D natural enteric coated vegetable capsule contains 10 cultures of 11 billion live active healthy cells:
L.Bifidus - 4.4 Billion
L.Acidophilus - 3.905 Billion
L.Helveticus (8781) - 550 Million
L.Casei - 440 Million
L.Plantarum - 440 Million
Bifido Infantis - 330 Million
Bifido Longum - 330 Million
Bifido Breve - 330 Million
S.Thermophilus - 220 Million
L.Bulgaricus - 55 Million
F.O.S. (Fructo-Oligosaccharides) 10 mg
A.O.S. (Arabino-Oligosaccharides) 10 mg
ETA - the enteric coating is added (for people at least, because the live acidophilus cells are destroyed 30 minutes without it. If the coating is bad for dogs, I could just take the powder out of the capsule, I think.

I don't think Faroh's gut likes your dog food or, maybe he has coccidia or giardia, would be my guess --- and a guess is all it is!
If he's happy, and growing, and full of beans, I'd be changing the food to something else before giving the probiotic capsule you described.
Then again, I might be feeding Dog Chow, so everything I say is suspect!
Seriously, I'd try to feed him something that agrees with him, and do multiple fecals if the pudding continues.
And try not to worry too much. If all poops are loose, that's different.

I am going into the pet supply shop tomorrow, so it is possible for me to start him on something else, and see how it goes. If he had giardia or coccidia, wouldn't all the stools be bad, and really runny?
I'm back to work on Wednesday, so will deworm him for whips, hooks and maybe tapeworm, since he's been eating dirt and grass, etc. and one of the cats does leave dead mice lying around (not that I've seen recently, but you never know).
The other kibble I've considered is Acana (same manufacturers as Orijen, but not so rich), or possibly "go!" or "now!". All are good foods, I'm just hesitant to change him to anything, including raw...
If I were to make another kibble change Betty, how slow do you think I should do it?

This brand was not on the list of brands that tested true to their claims at ConsumerLab. However, it wasn't tested, so it couldn't have made the list anyway. MANY brands do not accurately state their count on their label, though -- so many that I would probably not choose one in this country that ConsumerLab had not tested. (Products can request testing, so it's not just luck of the draw that determines whether or not they are on the ConsumerLab list.)
In Canada, I would probably ask about the product's outside (independent) testing results. Again, so many products do not test true to claim that I was pretty taken aback and became very skeptical of probiotic capsules/powders/etc.
But anyway, for the immediate problem, probiotics (aside from a good unsweetened unflavored yogurt) would not be my major concern; I would do exactly what Betty recommended, in fact.
I'm a big fan of probiotics, and my dogs get plenty of yogurt, but nothing about this description (OK in the morning, turning to pudding later; explosions of diarrhea) sounds like a lack-of-probiotics problem. If it wasn't overfeeding, then fecals would be my next step.
All JMO, though.
