Everyone needs stars back IMO. PTS is super heated--and always lurking when the pet becomes impossible, financially, behaviorally, medically.
Whoever raises the issue always gets the heat. That's probably not fair, since 98% of dogs on this forum will one day meet the needle, we will each of us one day make that decision.
You are correct Betty - any of us could be facing this decision at any time. Hopefully, none of us before it is really our dog's time, but it isn't hard to imagine the financial or medical issue which could force our hands.
Kudos to the OP for not making the issue a "blow up" by realizing that Phaedra's intentions were only what she thought might be best for the dog. Nice that we can agree to disagree, for the good of the dogs.

I get my meat from a BARF co op. I just started with them. I tried to change my order to all turkey to see if that helps this time. I buy a month at a time. Hopefully that works cause the lamb and stuff is all soooo much more expensive.
Kristi, do you buy from So Cal BARF by any chance? I do. They just started carrying Mary's air chilled organic/pastured chicken and turkey. I could not be happier. And you won't find anything injected in those. It's a little more expensive but worth every penny, IMO. I am so thrilled I can buy it in bulk for cheaper now.
Yah I do!! =) this is my second time ordering from them. I just paid my order since it was due by today. I did all turkey this round. But if that doesn't work I will look at the Organic section. I didn't even look there. I used to feed capone chicken backs and ground turkey. out of the organic section what do you feed your dog if you don't mind me asking? I can only buy a month at a time because I have limited freezer space.
I'll order anything, really. I try to get something different every time, and I buy about every two months. This month I bought a 20lb case of chicken necks (Mary's) for just under $16.60. I'm so stoked on that!! This month I got chicken and turkey, next month I'll probably get beef and either chicken or turkey.

Just chiming in that sometimes it is very challenging during the early stages of something being wrong with our dogs. My Grace was sick for a long time, like 3 years on and off, before we figured out that she has exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, meaning she doesn't digest food properly. Add in her other issues, namely she likes to develop cysts and also has funky vaginal folds that require daily attention (who knew I'd be doing THAT?!)and she is a toughy.
It was so frustrating to not really be sure how to help her or what to do. However, for the last five years, she has been healthy, happy and the BEST dog I have ever had the pleasure of sharing my life with. I have learned an incredible amount through the process and I am so very thankful that she ended up with me. It was meant to be...I hate to think what might have become of her with someone who wasn't willing to learn/adapt/grow with her.
Did I mention that she will be 9 years old in under a week?

I think you hit the nail on the head here. It is really heard trying to find the solution, and sometimes you think one thing is going to work and it doesn't. This is just amplified when money is an issue. Having a diagnosis and a definitive answer on how to make your pet feel better, does make you feel better. I feel good when I am doing things that I know are helping him, then some days when he has a flare up and we cant figure out why it gets frustrating and I get a little down on myself. In the end, it is all worth it and he's happy so we have to be doing something right.

I just wanted to mention, I have noticed a big difference between when I give salmon oil (fish oil capsules) & vit E, & when I don't.
Whether it be stiffness, cold weather, over exercise, or HD, I have never xrayed, just what I have noticed.

That is good to know! I have mainly noticed the difference with his coat. People always comment on how nice and shiny and soft he is
