My sister Priority-Mails me real tomatoes from her garden.
Unfortunately, that's many weeks away!
It's true that I live in the middle of an incredible salad bowl of farming, but nothing beats tomatoes grown in the East and the Southeast.
JMO!

Anyone else want to mail me samples of tomatoes for quality-control testing?

The rain has been delaying the planting season here. The farmers have been trying to plant but the ground is saturated. I hope it does not drive up the price of food. I tilled the garden last saturday, hoping the soil does not become compacted. Have a few crops planted, lettuce, tomatoes, peppers, beets, eggplant, but back to rain today. Will be planting sguash, sweetcorn, potatoes if we get some dry weather.Next year I plan to till the garden in april like my neighbor. Enjoyed the pictures michael.

Do you guys concentrate on the food items that are just never as good from the store, no matter where you are (I put tomatoes in that category, myself; nothing like heavy, warm, acidic, juicy tomatoes from the garden, IMO!), or items that cost a lot at the grocery store, or heavy-yield items, or staple items that you like to eat every day, or what?
I would love a garden full of tomatoes and basil. But I'd feel kinda silly spending time and energy on zucchini, which is so incredibly plentiful and cheap from the store and which is so ubiquitous that neighbors practically force it on each other.

Tomatoes, squash, and okra are our favorite vegetable. And I just like growing stuff.
I've got my little garden, and 23,000 sq. ft. of Bermuda grass to keep me busy.
The older I get, the more I want to grow *stuff*.

Oh my Gosh Michael, I am SO Envious of your lawn!!!
My back yard is all weeds! I have just been fearful of chemicals because of the dogs. We spend a lot of time back there, playing ball and training etc.
The last picture with Turbo in the sunshine sitting on the lawn is precious, I love it! Frame that one for sure!
Is it a recent photo? He looks like he's all healed up nicely from when he was attacked. He looks great BTW, happy as ever!

That pic was from earlier this month. Not so precious, though. He is lusting after a cat taunting him from across the street. He looks cute, but behind his puppy-like appearance is bad intentions.
Thanks for the compliments.

Sometimes just for the fun of growing. Nothing tastes better then home grown and organic grown veggies are not cheap to buy. My vegetables are not shipped from far away places and are picked when they are fully ripe. I do see some people selling summer sguash and other veggies along the roadside and thought to buy some to save space in my garden.
I do not have access to lots of spare vegetables. Most crops are grown on large farms. This year I am planting rasberries for the first time. Fruit is often very expensive. I would like to live in a community of growers where we could share home grown food with each other and. I like to be self sufficient, off the grid

Oh, I am totally with you! I've copyedited a few locavore books recently, and I love the whole topic. I'm going to receive a new one tomorrow to proofread, and it highlights an array of programs that help to reclaim local foods: CSAs, community gardens, school gardening programs, etc. Embracing backyard foods and the farmers market, and
beyond.
I was just wondering what your first emphasis is with limited space: the items you love most, or maybe the items that are cost-prohibitive in stores.
I see Michael chose their faves and planted them! Can't beat that for a plot-plan.
