Judging by the end result you did everything right, you aren't hurt, somehow your dog doesn't seen hurt and most importantly your child is not hurt.

Realistically, what would I have done?
Exactly as you did.
Ideally, what would I have done?
What else could you have done? Was mom home? Could mom have gotten outside fast enough to watch Koen?

Michael - I read this while not logged in, and I am truly feeling for you and your little dog. I had this exact thing happen, altho it was a DDB against my rottie - dog went under it's fence came into our barn, tried to attack us and my rottie did her best to defend us. Unfortunately, when I posted my story, I was pooh poohed, and called ridiculous - when I stated we finally had to shoot the dog with coyote shot after it drug my rottie by the head back under the fence and bit me. Being in unsupervised county island, we were told to shoot the dog, but by then it was in it's own yard. We have since had to completely fence our 2 1/2 acre property and dog proof it, buy bear spray and keep a can by the drive gate and I have purchased a taser. The bear spray works wonders and stops a dog dead (not actually) in it's tracks - so I would suggest spending the $40.
Good luck with your problem, glad you, your son and your dog are fine. Lynne

I think even at 3 most kids have the sense to stay out of something scary and to know when mom or dad really mean business about staying put.
I would have done the same as you.

What do y'all think about how I handled the whole thing regarding leaving Koen? What would y'all have done?
Given the same set of circumstances I believe I would have done exactly the same thing. It is real easy to play "arm chair quarterback" when you aren't in the thick of things. My original question wasn't to doubt what YOU had done Michael, it was just to see how the little guy was processing everything.
As with most things... if mom and dad are copasetic normally the child will be the same.

Pooh poohed about being attacked?
I don't remember anyone ever being pooh poohed here about being attacked, or about protecting their dogs, either.
I'm not going to de-rail this thread, though, so I will add that " We have since had to ..... buy bear spray and keep a can by the drive gate and I have purchased a taser. The bear spray works wonders and stops a dog dead (not actually) in it's tracks - so I would suggest spending the $40" sounds like a good suggestion.
I'm sorry all this happened to you, Lynne, and Mike, and everyone else who has suffered this kind of horror. These threads about the steps we are forced to take to defend ourselves, families, and dogs against the uncontrolled dogs of irresponsible (there HAS to be a better word for this than just "irresponsible") owners make my stomach clench. What are these people thinking, to have such total lack of regard for the lives of the humans and other dogs around them?

I believe I would have too. It sounds like presence of mind to me.
Mike knew that Koen WOULD "stay put." I can imagine other circumstances where I would not have trusted a different child not to follow after me, but those are exactly that: different child, different circumstances.
Yes, I believe I'd have done what you did, Mike.

God Michael, I just read this. I am so glad it turned out OK.
I would never second guess a loving parent in an emergency situation... you know your son, and you know your dog. In the nanosecond that you had to assess the situation, you knew your dog was in great danger and your child wasn't so you went to save your dog. I would have done the exact same thing.
Your son will be fine... I don't think this incident will cause any lasting effects or 20 years of therapy to overcome. Living in the same house with the infamous "wafghan"... well that's another story.
Take a breath, and have a beer. You deserve it!!!

You estimate only 20 years in wafghan related therapy Kel?? I bow to your experience and trust your judgement, but man, I would have guessed a good 35 after growing up with that monstrosity on the back of the couch.

Well, the boy is ONLY 3. Years in therapy will grow exponentially for each additional 6 months of exposure. In my "expert" opinion
I, however, will never recover from the brief but traumatic exposure I unwittingly suffered caused by an innocent little click of my mouse....
