I'd put my money on some tick borne illness. She began to improve as soon as you started the doxycycline, if I remember correctly.
Whatever the reason, I'm glad she's better. It sounds as though she was really ill.
Okay so her CSF came back normal, absolutely not meningitis. They wanted to keep running tests, but I was tired of spending money and having my poor girl poked and prodded to not find answers.
I can't figure it out, perhaps she just had a bad flu or something. Meanwhile she is continuing on the Doxy just in case.
She's currently eating and drinking normally. She doesn't have a fever anymore either. She is still a bit lethargic, but is improving everyday. I'm just happy there's progress, even if I don't know why!
Thanks for the update, I'm glad she is doing better!
It was another $200-$300 to test for TBD. I figured since she was getting better, there wasn't any point (other than closure). The reason the vet didn't suspect TBD is because it took about 4 days after starting the doxy to see an improvement and for her fever to go away. They said I would see improvement within 48 hours if it was indeed TBD. Anyway, my guess is that it was TBD all along, it just took a bit for the meds to show improvement. Guess I'll never know!
Great information from you guys! I appreciate all the support and kind thoughts She's almost totally back to normal now; she just gets tired quickly after minimal exercise. I figure it's because she's still recovering, like someone coming back after a bad flu, it takes a while to build that stamina back up.
I'm thinking doxycycline has become the "go to" antibiotic for most sick dog problems where there is not an obvious wound infection.
Probably wouldnt be a bad idea to have some on hand for camping trips or dogs who are often in places where ticks are a problem.
The talk I attended suggested that the tick repellants really did not work beyond 2 wks, none of them, even without a bath, even on shorthaired dogs.
