Got it - the Kong I have is too large - will get him a smaller one for now - also ordering some treats and things from LB. Thanks Steve.
Will see if they have them too - making him some homemade doggie biscuits from a recipe Anne sent me for him too - With all of the help I am getting I will soon understand dog thinking - well, maybe soon
Give him all kinds of things in there to stimulate his interest. Different kinds & sizes of boxes, toys, balls, chewy toys etc.
The x-pen is not a place to be used instead of a lot of outside time exploring his world. It is in addition to that. Bored pups can get fussy.
Bully sticks, peanut butter frozen kongs are are great.
Also sometimes pups, like babies, just get overstimulated & tired & throw tantrams. The crate is always a good place for a little less stimulation if he is overtired & needs a time out. You can even cover the crate with a towel to cut down on the visual stimulation.
I just sent in my order for treats, toys and bully sticks
Anne - I forgot about putting a box in there - I put other stuff but he wasn't into it - but I am not giving up.
We are going outside in a bit so he can play in the little children's swimming pool - I am blessed that I can fill it up each use and dump it as we have lots of water. Delicious well water.
Yes about putting the cover over his crate - did that last night .. he is happy as a hen sleeping on the floor at my feet - no wonder - he got no sleep last night so I will stimulate his mind and body - for short periods of time I promise - so he might be tired enough to sleep

Another reason why you do this Maggie, the short periods of time, besides their short attention span, its creating structure, a routine letting him learn when its time to be active and when its time to settle. You're shaping a lot of things with him right now.
STRUCTURE is your salvation! Animals like structure & like the security & comfort of what comes next.
LOL Connie, mine do the same thing. Bedtime too.
As I type mine are laying on their beds in the living room zonked out from the day & dinner. :-) They will let me know when it's time to go out for last time of the night & go to bed & settle for the night.
Just got back in and read all this - yep - schedules - I will try and get that down - nah, I won't try - I will do it and thanks for the great advice all
Got to run to the store for some steak for my tiny girl who is off her food a bit - all I have is the fresh ground steak and I think she wants a chunk. Tiny dogs who aren't at their best are fussy - surprise eh?
I will have photos done as soon as I edit them .. he went into the swimming pool with joyful abandon then he fell over and screamed like a banshee - so I dried him off and had him put his foot back in with lots of praise - he was fine but it was time to stop it as it's cooling down.
It worked! Cute. One thing I would do Maggie, when he's exploring or discovering something new like the pool and not in a place that may be a little dangerous, drop his leash. Encourage him, call him to you and reward him here and there, but don't have him on a tight line all the time. You may not be doing that, it may just be in the pics?
