But here in this lies the problem. Producers, what is a good producer?
All I have are BSP stats so don't jump down my throat here. But lets see.
Someone mentioned Troll.
Troll was bred 198 times. He had 973 pups. 28 of which went on to compete at the BSP. So 2.88% of the total.
Timmy didn't make the top 25 of BSP producers of all time.
Now lets look at:
Xento von der Maineiche. He was bred 48 times. Had 216 pups. 22 of which went to the BSP. 10.19%
If the BSP is your breeding goal, than I would have to go with door number 2, but if breeding good working dogs then the BSP is not necessarily going to be the best measure.
I would rather see that dog A was bred X times and produced 80% working dogs (including SAR, SchH, PSD's)
and then compare that to dog B who was bred X times and produced 60% working dogs.
Is this making sense? It is late, I should go to bed...
OED, I find a breeder I like and tell them to pick the dog. The paper stuff is nice, but I have seen dogs with great papers that were total shitters, and vice versa....
If the BSP is your breeding goal, than I would have to go with door number 2, but if breeding good working dogs then the BSP is not necessarily going to be the best measure HEY!!! SOMEONE GOT IT!!!
Thats is part of the problem. What are we breeding for? Is it the end all be all BSP? Is it to have a couple dogs a litter able to work? Or is it to consistently produce the most VERSITAL dogs, that can goto to the WUSV, BSP, SAR, Avalanche, Narc, K9, PP, pet?
Everyone breeds for something different. So it is very difficult to put list together of the best producers of anything. Maybe I have the best dog you could ever imagine, but he is sable. You don't like sable. So to you he is not the greatest.
This ends up going in a giant circle. I know what I look for. I look at the mothers line very heavily. I also want to see the mother work. If the mother has a title, so what. Maybe it was titled on her home field. With her home helper. She has much more to do with the pups. I look at her line first and foremost. Then I look at the studs line. What they are 'known' to produce. do they compliment. I want to know what I am going to get before I get it!
Thanks Todd, That was a good education. I learned something that I always thought was a good idea, makes the most sense. First time I've heard it explained the way you did.
If you are dealing with a reputable breeder, that is the way to go. However, not only does the breeder have to be reputable, they have to know how to pick puppies. That is the makings of another thread...
Kevin, I'm thinking of Scott von Haus Antverpa and Did van Darlushof Pup at present. Can't decide for a pup from this litter or one from Todd Gaster's kennel.
I heard that Ciska will have a litter for Scott early 2003.
I will have to decide by next week,
Crabtree, If I were you I would get a dog from either Rocky or CJ crossed with a bitch out of Otis-Mink-Grief lines. If he has a breeding like that in the future.
I expect some credit for the plug Gastor.
