the pain was the vegetable mixture concoction that hade to be ground up in mass and then mixed in. It seemed like I was making that up way too often and I got tired of it pretty quick.
ah, yes, that is a pita. i hated it, too.
how often were you feeding veggies? i found i can cut back on veggies quite a bit if i'm feeding organ meats, as they provide some of the same function, which is keeping the dog regular.
i feed veggies only about once a week now, and have made beef hearts a staple fed 2-3x a week. they serve both as organs and also muscle meat.
to make my life easier with the veggies, i just use whatever leftover veggies and overripe fruit we have around the house and garden. i do it in a standard household blender. and i use PLENTY of water so it is easier to grind up. i add in a whole egg with shell, some fish oil, some dried kelp, and pour it over beef liver or a can of fish and some cottage cheese or yogurt.
that is just one meal a week that has to be prepared by hand, and it is pretty easy if you use as much water as it takes to puree easily in a blender.
i buy the eggs and cottage cheese very cheaply at costco. the veggies are free.
Well, 5 days into the Natural Balance and my dobie's problems seem to be a thing of the past. No gas, No pains and she is consistently acting like a pup, playful and outgoing. I am comfortable feeding this food, I believe it has quality ingredients and has none of the things that give the dog problems. Thanks to everyone that gave oppinions and suggestions (many of which I am still doing and will continue), we are happy
Just thought I would post what the situation currently is with my dobie.
After more than a full month on the Natural Balance her gas/pain problem is a thing of the past. I posted on a different link about different protien sources and the effects. I decided to just stick with the Natural Balance canned to mix in with the kibble and observe the results. That combination has proved to be the magic bullet I was hoping for
Off and on she would experience some discomfort but now even that is completely gone. Over the last week I have experimented with some other canned meats and no further ill effects. She is finally cured.
I have followed many of the suggestions to slow down her eating and continue to do so. Thanks to everybody for those pointers, I believe they also helped.
What I did learn is I needed to be more patient in observing the effects of different foods. Because she was having some minor bouts I almost tried a different food and that would have been a mistake. I know many of the nice folks on this board feed raw but if someone is having problems with gas or what appears to be alergic issues I highly recommend the Natural Balance, potatoe/duck formula. Takes alot of the guess work out of what is causing the problems as it's single source protien and carb, no grains and quality ingredients. They also have a fish/sweet potatoe formula.
I don't have the alergic issues with my dogs (other than the gas with dobe) but some friends of our have dogs that were itching and chewing their paws, the vet had suggested a switch to Science diet and some sort of meds. These friends were feeding Purina Beneful. I suggested the switch to a better food and after several weeks the problems are going away.
Anyway, again thanks to everyone. The dobie is pretty darn happy.
