He dove into the check back and breast meat last night like a trooper! Since his bowel movement before dinner wasn't "normal" I decided to keep his portion size a little larger than the 1/2 he was eating (should be a little over 1 lb for him).
This morning the same.
Now, the only thing I have noticed this morning was the poop - again here we go with poop. Must be a fixation we have.
He did have a bowel movement but I would call it diarrhea. Not watery but much softer than pudding. And the odd thing - there wasn't much of it at all, had one firm component - the rest very soft and loose followed but a long fart! LOL (can't believe I'm writing this AND you folks actually read this).
For all the food he has put in I'm surprised that more isn't coming out.
He's active, not lethargic at all, seems he normal chipper self so I'm assuming that all is well.
I'm in the process of uplaodiung a video to youtube of his first feeding on raw. Once it's up and viewable I will post the link here.
Peter, are you adding any probiotics yet?
I think what you are describing is pretty typical of a dog that is switching to raw.
Was he straining at all?
PS volume reduction is a great benefit of feeding raw (and noticeable odor reduction is a plus, too)
Probiotics in the form of one tablespoon (semi-heaping) of yogurt.
Do I need to be concerned at this point about feeding him about half of what he should be eating? I'm guessing that the answer is "No, as long as he still looks and acts healthy and not beginning to become emaciated."
I think the use of digestive enzymes in dogs that are new to raw is underutilized. Probiotics are good for intestinal flora but many dogs need to be acclimated to digesting bones and non processed foods..
I'd really recommend adding enzymes to every meal for a while. Can't hurt and may help. http://leerburg.com/55.htm
Some of our customers are reporting good results with this supplement as well when switching foods. (it's not just for adding to Honest Kitchen) http://leerburg.com/form.htm Love the name!
So then, will this work as well ? http://leerburg.com/50.htm Or are the others better in this case for some reason ?
In your opinion, I should begin probiotics supplements in addition to the yogurt as soon as possible and continue indefinitely to help support the dogs digestive system?
