Lauren hi, i never intend to get into a situation of "handler aggresion" or any of the things suggested here. i was just awkwardly responding to others comments and it came out dumb sounding. in fact this thread has ended up non-informational so i'm off it.
Peter,
Sorry to see you've seem to have checked out of this thread (site?) because it's so uninformative.
Here's what I (think I know) about DS's. Respective of what you may have read at various DS sites about loyalty, biddability, blah blah blah. If you read the descriptions of any other dog in the world you'll read the same pab.
The references I've gotten from those that handle and breed DS's are completely contrary.
The proper DS is bred for independence, DS's are selectively bred for hardness, (and I like this description) DS's should be/are bred for flammability.
Add it up together Peter and you'll start to understand why we question the wisdom of the course, you as a green handler, think you want to take.
There is no intention for handler aggression obviously...what you need to understand is that handler aggression usually comes with Dutchies......its part of owning most of them....if you mess up the dog will redirect its focus onto its handler and take a bite.....any bite and if that is you or a dirty bite on a decoy....well its gonna get it's bite.....
Its a breed thing.
I know that no green handler is going to be able to handle a green Dutchie.....prolly not a trained one either.
Its like putting someone who has never ridden a horse on a racing fit derby winner.................not gonna end well.
There has been plenty of info on this thread....you just don't seem to be listening.
And that is frustrating because I had hoped that you were man enough to hear the truth and learn.......
Willie
I even went so far as to PM Will Rambeau......ended up having a nice conversation with him about some other things....I took my time and his for you.....I don't think you can say that we are all nasty knuckle heads.....
There are also lines of GSDs & Mals that seem to lean toward a fair amount of handler aggression. So it is good to know your lines or know someone that does to guide you. Also it is not always the hard ass tempermented dogs that have HA in them.
There are always surprizes in life where dogs are concerned.
So true Anne,
But you begin adding up a dog that is bred to be independent, hard, and flammable (I really like that term) you can pretty much figure you had better know your P's and Q's before you even pick up the leash.

My experience with handler aggression is that where certain lines may be more prone to it, is that you often find a history of poor/unfair training.
Sometimes Betty, but not always, but when you have a green handler, often you unintentionally get unfair handling...not on purpose...but because every noob makes a mistake.....not a good combo.
Not only that but he is talking about being his own decoy........Most people I know frown seriously on that.....where did he get the idea that being your own decoy is a good idea?
What else is going to come from that idea source?
Better go with a more forgiving breed to start with.

hi all forgive me for my little "moment" i don't want to dissapear on bad terms or give the impression i don't appreciatte people with experinece trying to offer good sense to a thick-skulled angry old man.
Randy really got to me for some reason about "...enjoy my current dog..etc" i felt like such a traitor to her for considering another purchase. i am so blessed to have found one like her faults n all. there is not a thing that i have asked her to do that she hasn't gone all out to achieve including charging over any agilty obstacle put in front of her. i built an international spec course from plans (minus the weaves) no prob in respectable time to.(haven't started weaves yet).
hunting - schutzhund people your game is child's play compared to hunting and dispatching (sorry PETA folks) an enraged boar knowing it has to kill or be killed and your miles from a vehicle or any back up with a just a dog and a knife (don't recomend anyone trying that with one dog). a boar will leave the dog as soon as it sights the man and go for him - want to talk hard dogs.
and walking around a show with over 300 purebred show dogs on display people will ignore the main arena and run up to ask to get photos of her with their kids - i don't know why. when their is a small child she gets a differnt personality and goes all gentle and gushy.
so why the other get another dog that is definately going to a problem on a number of levels. i could wait 10 years and get all the training etc that you have all said. statistically speaking for my demographic its an inevitable slide down hill as far as the mind and body goes so hence some urgency.
thanks for bearing with even when i choose to ignore the message at times.
You have a working boar dog!!??
Sweeeet.
Is she a strike dog or catch dog...or both?
Those are really neat dogs...do you have a pix?
What breed or combo is she?
Sooo cool.
We can't use dogs up here...sigh.
If they want to get rid of the pigs, they should let us use whatever we need to get them with...they are already taking over so much farm land its silly...but nooooo, can't use dogs up here.
My husband has been out several times this year for hogs...saw some while he was out for turkey....
Def need pix.
