Not suggesting we kill anything?!!!
I'm sorry, but you're either eating the food or you ARE the food.
Not many places in-between in this life.

Obviously I would avoid them at all costs. Here is my questions. Coyotes are about 35-40lbs. Would the average GSD or 80 lb Pit be able to hold its own with one of these?
Or is it because the Coyotes are wild animals its a different ball game?
Personally, I think it's a different ball game.
From the coyote discussions we’ve had and incidents we’ve heard about locally, I would venture to say that “most” domestic dogs would probably lose a fight with a coyote. Domestic dogs, for the most part, live a much softer, social life. A wild coyote will always fight for its life by means and instincts that it was born, raised and trained with. They run down food and are well versed in killing. A larger dog might be able to inflict a lot of damage, but if he’s not versed in fighting or doesn’t have a killer instinct, my bets would be with the coyote.
However, I think much like any physical interaction between two living creatures (humans included) mental state, physical fitness, training and psychological approach can put a 120 lb, combat trained woman into a position easily overpowering a 250 lb, potato chip eating, couch potato man.
By sheer visual and self preservation though, I don’t think a single coyote would attack a dog larger than himself. But if he’s got friends around, again I would say all bets would be off on the “average” domestic dog.
All JMO of course.

For those who didn't know that coyotes lure larger dogs out to the pack I found this video the other day. This person was very lucky she had her dog at the end of the day.

IMO unless you're actively hunting them with dogs I would not encourage your pups to have ANY interaction with them.

Wow.... that video is amazing and a bit frightening. I agree - that is one lucky dog and owner. (I personally would have dismounted and tied my dog up as soon as I realized what was going on).

Here's a weird fact from my State:
since they re-introduced the wolves - our coyote population dropped by a third.
Seems the wolves target coyotes pretty hard........

Interesting video with the coyotes and border collie.
Barbara, I agree. Shame on her for letting her dog chase after them, multiple times, especially when she saw more then one. The dog seemed to have a decent recall. Dismount, and leash your dog. I'm surprised on the lack of action from the rider. I've seen coyotes, and aggressive dogs while I've been mounted. The best defense is a good offense IMO, and I was lucky to have a cutting horse, who was not afraid to use his size. We'd charge. It worked every time for us, but I'm sure eventually we'd have run into a super aggressive dog that would bite. We were lucky (I was significantly younger then, and didn't have quite as much sense) It really seemed to throw off both the coyotes and dogs when we'd run straight at em'.
Will- that statistic does not surprise me at all!!! I like that better then the wolves going after my dogs and cats!

Wow.... that video is amazing and a bit frightening.
I end up being all cry-y watching those 'in the nature' documentaries, can't imagine me just filming the documentary of my own pet.

There was a man attacked & bitten on the back of his leg yesterday(2 towns away & where I lived until 6 years ago). Apparently the coyote was after his child & the man snatched up his child & the coyote still charged him & bit him. I guess the coyote was pissed that he didn't get the 'meal' he was after & took his frustration out on the man.
This town is in CT, right next to Rye, NY, where a couple of kids were attaacked. There is alot of open space in the back country of the town, but I don't remember hearing if they gave the location in town that this took place.
I have coyotes in the in woods behind my house..I see one on occasion. I have a 6' stockade fence & I check the fencing daily for any digging under the fence etc. I would prefer that my dogs not have an encounter if possible.

The coyoete that bit the man has tested positive for rabies. So that raises the stakes, for keeping your animals safe.
