I am going into the pet supply shop tomorrow, so it is possible for me to start him on something else, and see how it goes. If he had giardia or coccidia, wouldn't all the stools be bad, and really runny?
No, not necessarily, from what I've read, anyway.
Betty, have you seen intermittent diarrhea episodes with parasitic infections?

" I'm just hesitant to change him to anything, including raw..."
I wouldn't start raw with diarrhea already a problem. Poop is such a huge tool for gauging so many aspects of raw feeding.

I guess it's just the regularity of the irregularity that puzzles me. The Acana might be good because it is less rich, but the same manufacturer, same plant, same general ingerdients - so if it is just to overwhelming, that might be the ticket. On the other hand, of course a complete change might be ideal, like the "go!" or "now!".
How long of a switch over phase do you think is in order?
I will do the fecal on Wednesday and look for everything.

Hey Phaedra, before you think about changing his diet again, maybe try taking everything else away first. No more bully sticks or stuffed kongs, nothing but the food and water.
I may have missed it, but have you tried setting feeding times for him? If so, have you tried adjusting the quantity of his meals? Maybe a little more in his early feedings and not so much later? Give him a little more time to regulate.

Hey Steve,
For the past 2 (3?) days, he's had absolutely nothing but food and water. His food is pre-measured in the morning into a container for the day (only 1 3/4 cups). That is split into 2 small meals, breakfast & lunch, and the rest I use (cut up into halves to make it last longer) for training throughout the day. I gave him his last 10 or 12 kibbles in a small kong around 4:30pm.
I know he's really hungry. For the last hour and a half, nothing can settle him. He doesn't want to play, we go outside and he drags me in, he is running to the water dish and drinking, but not much, and continually just seems desperate for something. He was digging and digging like a maniac at the corner of his x-pen for about 7 or 8 minutes, until I realized a single kibble was on the floor just a few inches away.
I don't want to change his food. I really like this food, and he it seemed great for him at first, compared to the poops he came with.

Parasites can contribute to intermittent diarrhea. So can excitement, lots of water, lots of exercise. Babies sometimes have an "irritable bowel" -- and it's not a disease, or if it is a disease, we don't know it's cause.
Diarrhea is a common presenting complaint. Kaopectate or Pepto Bismol will stop most of it, but pups hate it, owners hate to give it, and the pumpkin probably does an equal job. We prescribe lots of metronidazole and /or Albon for pups with soft stool-- MDs never give that for soft poo in the diaper!
I'd keep checking fecals, and try not to worry, unless it's most of the time-- or, unless he comes from a place where they only deworm with "natural" medicines,
i.e. he's never really been dewormed, and his dam has never really been dewormed, in which case I'd deworm him like crazy.

Think about it like this too Phaedra. Look at the ingredients of Orijen. Fish, fruits, vegetables. Even Lactobacillus acidophilus product. I'm sure there's a ton of things he never had in his 8wks. I just would think anything else new at this point will only make it worse.
In fact, I don't think I would even really worry about 1 pudding a day in this 1st couple of weeks. He's eating, drinking, showing no discomfort. I would be a little more patient, but something else I may have missed, did you have him checked by a vet? Just a general check up and intro thing?

You know what, I agree with Steve, I probably wouldn't change the food for one pudding per day either. Not in a puppy, who eats everything in sight, feels great, and has 1 or 2 firm pooters for every pudding.
I'd keep on track, and check the fecals. And feed him enough so that he isn't starving. And try not to worry.

Yeah, I suppose you are right. He basically has 4 poops a day. 1 good, 1 ok, and 2 pudding, like the one he had just now.
He was dewormed twice before I got him, checked by a vet the day before flying, and 2 days after he arrived. But it was a very simple exam on my end. He is due for a distemper/parvo booster in 2 weeks, so at least he will have a more thorough exam then.
Betty - how much pumpkin would you say? He would eat the whole can if he had the chance!

I understand the stress of it. I worry just like you are. You're taking good care of him. He'll be fine.
