Dana,
While most feel it was an over reaction, I feel it's better to over react than to not react at all. If I was the owner of the dog, I would be a little POd, but after I calmed down, I would see that you had a genuine concern for the dog. That is all that matters to me.
Don't stop reacting.

Thanks, Kel.
I'll never stop reacting when it's the welfare of an animal at stake.

I'm pretty sure no one was suggesting that. I think the question was more along the lines of, was the animal's welfare at stake. But as many said, if in doubt, of course you act.
Subtopic was calling 911. But again, better than not acting when one is in doubt.

I just got the distinct impression from a couple of folks that I should have just left it alone unless I could positively determine that the dog was in distress, that's all.

Dana, it's true that a couple of folks here had the strong opinion that you should have left it alone. Others supported you. I think most said it maybe wasn't what they would have done but agreed you were only thinking of the dog's welfare.
To repeat a worn-out old saying, "You can please some of the people all of the time, all of the people some of the time, but you can't please all of the people all of the time."
I'm concerned that you're really stressing over this. Please relax and know that no one is handing down a judgment on you but, rather, just offering their opinions, which you asked for. In any given situation, a hundred people will react in a hundred different ways. We're all just human.

You're right - I did ask for people's opinions and that's what I got - good, bad or indifferent. If I didn't want to know what people thought I wouldn't have asked :-)
I've gained alot of insight with this thread and it's only when the words become hurtful that I found myself stressing over the situation more. I do need to just take a deep breath and take it in stride.
Thanks.

Dana,
Almost everybody agreed with you on here, a little surprising but there it is. What remarks were "hurtful" ?
My dogs were outside for 10 hrs today, it was about 25 degrees out with 2 feet of snow on the ground. Now what if some neighbor thought they were cold and called the police, would you think that's okay?

... I just got the distinct impression from a couple of folks that I should have just left it alone unless I could positively determine that the dog was in distress, that's all.
I didn't get that impression at all.
I'm kind of stunned that we're seven pages into this. I think the original post asked for opinions and received them, from "I never would have thought that a dog who isn't wet, isn't hairless, and is sheltered would be in any distress from cold for the length of time that people stay in a gym" to "911?!" and all over in between, with a ton of "but when in doubt, act - go with your gut" ... and I don't think there was ANY hint of "first determine positively that the dog is in distress." This is a board that considers the dog's welfare first in just about every situation that doesn't involve an endangered child.
So -- differences of opinion. Exactly what was requested. Hurtful? I don't see it.

I agree Connie. Can we move on from this? The OP's intentions were proactive for the dog... You would have thought it was summer and she IGNORED the situation.
Some of us might have done this or might have done that, but no dogs were harmed in any of the scenarios. Isn't that a win-win?
