Erika was an E litter pup and the breeder's name was Medina. Max got the name Max because that's seems to fit every GSD. Maggie was a GSD mix that was extra sweet and gentle. Roxie I got as adult and saw no reason to change it. Drago got his name because it rhymed with "Brago" Aus Der RitterMark, his father. Brago is a super dog and everything I thought a German Shepherd dog is suppose to be. Very serious in a fight, a great protection dog and family dog.

Waht a great thread! I like short people names for dogs usually, Rottie was Jake (his dad was Elwood), now Jack, Hank (King of the Hill)but he also answers to little fat man and Raven (missus's choice) I had a staffy bull named Angellus from Buffy he came named and I really liked it he was a wicked little dog very arrogant and cocky but exceptionally smart and tough not aggresive but high pain threshold! and just adored me and if I was around he'd climb out kennels and bust through everything until he was at my side I really loved that little guy!! Also had a Gypsy, Shyla, Paige and Magnum and you guys are right it's amazing how they take on their names, never thought about it till now!!

I was never quite sure what the story was, but there was a civilian-handled Black Lab drug dog named "Stash" with us for awhile, as well.
Like that one!!

I think they take on their names because we expect a certain behaviour from them and we intentionally or unconsciously reward that behaviour

I've got Grace who was named by mom after the hymn "Amazing Grace"...she wholeheartedly lives up to her name
Then there is Kira, well really Akira z Khaos. She got her registered name based on the fact that she did indeed create chaos in our lives for quite awhile. My sis named her.
Newest addition is Vigo, named after a Ghostbuster II character...named by my husband. I wanted Gatsby (we have a cairn terrier named Daisy also for those of you have read the Great Gatsby).
Maybe one of these days I will get to name a dog

JD's real name is "Jack Daniels". My father died in a car accident when I was only about 5. His true first name was Jack - not a nickname. One of the only stories I was told about him was that he always wanted a child named Danny. Closest he got was me - Dana. So, I now have "Jack Daniels". Also known as Butthead, Pinhead and Baby Boy.
My Rottie's full name is "Dagger's Callie Rose" and goes by "Callie". Father's name included Dagger....also known as "Miss Fuzzy Butt" and "Miss Whiny Butt" the majority of the time.
Had a rescued kitty - a 16# male that was "Babycakes" after the Armistead Maupin character in "Tales of the City".
Know a GSD named "AWOL", and another dog named "Torque" (imagine what that dog must be like!). I've had a Gus (Gusto), Josh and Sangria.

I generally name my dogs after literary titles or quotes:
Broken CircleBucksKgdmByTheC call name Poe. Registered name is a line from the Poe poem Annabel Lee.
Kuawarri Paint the Town Blue call name Finn. Sire's call name was Paint and the name is a play on "paint the town red". Finn for Huckleberry Finn. Although he later turned out to be more of the Finn from Great Expectations ;-)
Ayres' Pride Envy N Avarice call name Sinjin. Pride, Envy, and Avarice is not only three of the seven deadly sins but a line from Dante's Inferno. Sinjin is british slang for St. John. I call Sinjin my purgatory puppy - a little of heaven and a little of hell.
WayOut's Fox in Speckled Socks call name Frost. From the Suess book. Call name was what her breeder called her when she was born because there was frost on the ground outside at the time and the name just stuck.
I have several names already picked out for future dogs :-)
